Question Why 60 - Olympics?

I have searched but can't find the answer to why the IGF proposed a 60 player limit for both males and females in the Olympic golf competition.

Does anyone know?

I can only assume it's so there will be no need for a cut.

It's easier, perhaps,to get golfers to travel half-way around the globe if they know they'll avoid the ignominy of an early exit...

On the PGA TOUR, World Golf Championship stroke events are no cut events of 80 players, so why not 80 players in the Olympics instead of 60?

Ps: I think I know why there is a 60 player limit for each gender but I want someone from the PGA TOUR to verify it, so I'll let you know if I get an answer.

I see Tiger is thrilled golf is to be included in 2016 and says he'll play. I guess that shows us he's proposing playing until then at least, and intends being right up there.

Here's the answer I got from the PGA TOUR to the question, why 60 for the field size in the Olympics.

"It was a blend of providing the highest-ranked field possible while ensuring we kept the total number of golfers as small as possible."

Sounds like a good number. Not too big and not too small.

I'll confess to what I thought Ty Votaw and company were up to.

I thought they limited the field of each gender to 60 so that they could have both competitions on the same dates and on the same golf course by simply using different tees for men and women.

I can't see a problem with that, actually. As long as the men are competing against the men, what difference does it make? I could understand your concern if the men and women were competing against each other, but I don't think that's going to be the case.

here's my take on it. I think only amateurs should be allowed to play in the Olympics. Course it's 7 years away, but imagine the excitement if Alexis Thompson, Amanda Blumenherst, Maria Uribe, were able to compete (I realize Uribe and Blumenherst aren't amateurs anymore) for Olympic gold. For me the Olympics has always been rooting for the underdog, seeing unknowns do remarkable things under pressure. I have a feeling the public would want to see an underdog win a gold medal than Tiger Woods winning his 12,000th victory. And plus, for pro golfers, they have so many 'major' or big events, for amateurs, this would be incomparable.
