Question Golf in the Olympics?

I am curious what do you guys and gals think about professional golf being in the Olympics, especially under the proposed qualifications for players?

Here are the qualifications and I provided a link that gives additional information.
---------------------------------------------------------------
A field of 60 players for each of the men's and women's competitions, utilizing the Official World Golf Rankings as a method of determining eligibility. The top 15 world-ranked players would be eligible, regardless of the number of players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players would be eligible based on world ranking, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15.

Personally, I don't like it at all.

Blue,

Did you read the proposed qualifications?
On the women's side, in 6 years or so, Korea might have 10 players in the 60 player field and other countries only have 2 each. Is that fair?

I think it's a fair system. It strikes a good balance between automatically giving slots to the best players regardless of country and trying to create international distribution.

If golf becomes an Olympic sport will Annika make a run at Olympic Gold?

I don't believe she's qualified now. She's not in the top 15 in the world rankings. She's not in the world rankings at all, since she had herself removed -- something I was opposed to, since messing with history is not a good thing.

I argued for a while here with either MP or Buzzer about what history meant but gave up when they didn't understand the concept that the rankings are nothing more and nothing less than a historical measure.

Blue,

But we are talking about the year 2016, which is when golf will be part of the Olympics if it is approved on Friday.
Annika could come out of retirement in say 2014 and attempt to get back into the top 15 by the Olympic cut-off date.

I am convinced that a Wiener is in charge of the LPGA tour's Twitter account.

LPGA 360: Golf awaits Olympic-sized decision
Today at 2:19pm
For you early birds, log onto Welcome to the website of the Olympic Movement - Olympic.org around 5 a.m. ET tomorrow to watch golf’s final presentation to the IOC in Copenhagen. Suzann Pettersen and Michelle Wie will make passionate pleas to the committee about the value of golf and how much they believe it will enhance the Olympic movement (Michelle will be introducing a video of her two former “idols;” tune in to see who they are).

The membership will vote following the presentation to determine whether to add golf to the Olympic Games beginning in 2016. A decision is expected later in the morning, so please visit LPGA.com to learn the results.

"We have demonstrated to the IOC Executive Board throughout the evaluation process that golf's bid to become an Olympic sport has received unprecedented support from both amateur and professional golf organizations around the world and leading international players," said Ty Votaw, executive director of the International Golf Federation’s Olympic Golf Committee.

Stay tuned!
