13일 끝난 US여자오픈에서 당당히 메이저 퀸으로 등극한 지은희(23·휠라코리아)를 15일 서울 강남의 한 카페에서 만났다. 지은희는 스스로를 ‘결벽증에 가까운 완벽주의자’라고 평가했다.

We met Ji Eun Hee (23·Fila Korea), who proudly ascended as a "major queen" at US Women's Open which ended on the 13th, at a cafe in Kangnam (a fashionable district in Seoul south of the Han River.) Ji Eun Hee volunteered the analysis that she is 'overly fastidious and a perfectionist.'

“저 는 옷에 뭐가 묻으면 참지 못해요. 특히 흰옷에 뭐라도 묻으면 바로 갈아 입어야 해요. 라운드 도중에도 뭐가 묻으면 계속 물수건으로 닦아요. 그래서 중요한 대회에서는 검은 옷을 입어요. 항상 물건들은 정해진 위치에 있어야 하고 새 옷이라도 잘 정리를 해놔야 직성이 풀려요.”

"I can't stand getting stains on my clothes. Especially if white clothes get a stain on it, I'll immediate get changed. Even during a round if something gets on my cloth, I'll continuously wipe it with a hand towel. That's why I wear dark clothes in important tournaments. Everything always has to be in its proper place and new clothes has to be properly put away before I can feel satisfied."

지난해 2월 하와이에서 열린 LPGA투어 필즈오픈. 2라운드까지 4언더파를 기록했던 그는 3라운드에서 갑자기 실격 처리됐다.

Last year at the LPGA tour's Field's Open in Hawaii, she was suddenly disqualified during the 3rd round after she had recorded 4 under par after the 2nd round.

“파 를 했는데 마커를 맡은 일본 선수가 스코어카드에 버디라고 표기했어요. 그냥 모른 체 하고 넘어갈 수도 있었어요. 그런데 도저히 용납이 안 됐어요. 그래서 자진 신고를 했고 결국 실격 처리됐죠.” 그의 성격을 알려주는 에피소드다.

"I made a par but the Japanese player with the marker wrote down on the score card that I made a birdie. I could have just pretended to not have notice. But I really could not tolerate it. So I reported myself and in the end I was disqualified." It was an episode that showed her personality.

그는 지난해 6월 웨그먼스LPGA대회에서 생애 첫 우승을 따낸 뒤 우리말로 인터뷰를 했고, 공교롭게도 이 대회가 끝난 뒤 LPGA투어에서 영어 사용 의무화 이야기가 흘러나왔다. 그는 자신 때문에 그런 결정이 나온 것 같아 죄책감에 시달렸다고 한다. 이번 US여자오픈에서도 그는 우리말로 인터뷰를 했다. 소감 정도는 영어로 충분히 할 수 있는데도 말이다.

She gave the interview in our language after winning LPGA Wegmann's for her first career victory and as it would have it, after the tournament, stories about LPGA tour wanting to put in place an English language requirement rule leaked out. She said she was troubled by a guilty conscience because she thought this kind of decision came out because of her. In this year's US Women's Open, she also gave the interview in our language. Even though she could have at least expressed her impressions in English without too much trouble.

“성격 때문인 것 같아요. TV로 중계되고 있기 때문에 완벽한 영어를 구사해야 한다고 생각했어요. 하지만 우승 만찬에서는 영어로 건배 제의를 했어요.”

"I think it was because of my personality. Because it was being broadcast on TV I thought I must have perfect command of English. But at the victory dinner, I proposed the toast in English."

완 벽을 추구하는 성격이지만 안 되는 게 있다. 바로 요리다. “라면을 빼고는 할 줄 아는 요리가 없어요. 이상하게 요리만큼은 못 하겠더라고요. 그래서 미국에서 가끔 한국음식이 먹고 싶으면 아빠한테 김치찌개를 해 달라고 부탁하지요.” 가장 좋아하는 음식은 닭요리. 귀국 후 가장 먹고 싶은 음식도 얼큰한 닭볶음탕이라고 한다. 주량은 소주 한 병 정도. 애창곡은 그룹 플라워의 ‘포 유(For You)’다. 친한 연예인은 영화배우 하지원. 이상형은 탤런트 공유 같은 스타일이라고 털어놓았다.

Though it is her personality to persue perfection, there are things where that doesn't work. That would be cooking. "Beside ramen, I don't know how to make any dish. Strangely, cooking is something I can't do. That's why if I want to eat some Korean food in the US, I sometimes ask my dad if he can make me kimchee jjigae (kimchee stew)." Her favorite food are chicken dishes. She said dish she most wants to eat after homecoming was roast chicken soup. For drink, about a bottle of soju (Korean cheap liquor.) Her favorite song is group Flower's 'For You'. The entertainer she is friendly with is the actress Ha Ji Won. She confessed that her ideal type would have the style the actor Gong Yoo (a popular TV star now serving his 2 year mandatory military service.)

1m63cm, 55kg으로 다소 왜소한 체격이지만 누구에게도 지고는 못 사는 성격이다.

At 1m 63cm (5' 4") and 55kg (121 lb) she's diminutive in stature but she can't stand losing to anyone.

“중 학교 때 한번은 남학생하고 팔씨름을 했는데 이겼어요. 그러자 학교에 소문이 퍼지면서 남학생들이 하나둘씩 찾아와 대결을 신청했어요. 딱 한 명을 빼고는 모두 이겼어요. 6세 때부터 수상스키를 했기 때문에 팔목 힘은 센 편이었어요.”

"One time in middle school, I arm-wrestled a boy and won. After that, rumors spread and boys, one by one, came to me asking for a showdown. I beat everyone except for one. Because I've been water skiing since 6, my arm strength was on the strong side."

LPGA투어에서도 그에게 ‘딱 걸린’ 선수가 있다고 한다. 바로 수잔 페테르센(노르웨이)이다. 페테르센은 지난해 웨그먼스LPGA에서 선두를 달리다 그에게 3타 차 역전패를 당했다.

In the LPGA tour, she said there is a player who got "caught" by her. It's Suzanne Pettersen. Pettersen was leading at last year at the Wegmann's when she suffered a reversal of fortune at Ji's hand.

“마 지막 18번 홀에서 10cm 거리의 챔피언 퍼트를 남겨 놓고 있었어요. 페테르센 볼은 저보다 약간 뒤에 있었고요. 그런데 저보고 먼저 홀아웃하라는 거예요. 그래서 제가 다시 한번 쳐다보니깐 불쾌한 표정을 지으며 손가락으로 그럼 마크를 옮겨 달라고 하는 거예요. 얼마나 화가 나던지. 그 이후로는 페테르센에게는 절대로 지고 싶지 않아요.”

"At the last 18th hole, all that was left was a 10cm (3.3 inch) putt for the championship. Pettersen's ball was slightly behind. But she told me to hole-out first. So when I when I looked at her again, with an unpleasant expression, she used her finger to tell me to move my green marker. I was so angry. After that, I never want to lose to Pettersen."

그의 아버지 지영기(54)씨는 수상스키 국가대표 감독을 지냈다. 그는 “중학교 시절 수상스키 국가대표 선수들이랑 함께 하루 종일 체력 훈련을 했다. 너무 힘들어 골프를 때려 치우고 싶은 생각이 간절했다”고 말했다.

Her father Mr. Ji Young Gi (54) was the coach of the national water skiing team. She said "I spend my middle school days in physical training with the national water ski team all day. Because it was too hard, I earnestly wanted to quit golf. "

지은희는 스피드 광이기도 하다. 그는 “지난해 우승한 뒤 아버지가 우승 한번 더하면 자동차를 사주신다고 약속했다. 이번에는 무슨 수를 쓰더라도 꼭 자동차를 사고 말겠다”고 말했다.

Ji Eun Hee is also a speed maniac. She said "last year, after winning, my father promised me that he would buy me a car if I won again. This time, no matter what it take, I want to get a car, I told myself."

국내에 있을 때 몇 km까지 달려봤냐고 묻자 “아빠가 아시면 혼날 텐데…”라면서도 “200km까지 밟아 봤다”고 대답했다.

When asked what is the fastest she has driven inside the country, she answered "If dad finds out, I'll get in trouble ..." and said she "topped out at 200km/hr (~124 miles/hour)."

자 연스럽게 아버지 이야기가 나왔다. 지영기씨는 2007년 딸을 위해 20년 넘게 애정을 쏟아 부었던 수상스키 감독 직을 내놓았다. 그는 “그때 나를 위해 희생하는 아빠의 모습을 보고 마음이 아팠다. 아빠를 위해서라도 꼭 성공해야겠다고 다짐했고 지금 이 자리에 설 수 있었던 계기가 됐다”고 힘주어 말했다.

Stories about her father came out naturally. In 2007, Mr. Ji Young Gi gave up being the the coach of the national water skiing team, which he had been doing for 20 years, for his daughter.

“아버지가 저를 꼭 안아주시면서 ‘잘했어. 이제 네가 챔피언이다’고 말씀해 주셨어요. 아빠의 노고에 보답할 수 있었던 것 같아 뿌듯했어요.”

"Father hugged me tightly and said to me 'You did well. Now you're a champion.' I felt fulfilled because I felt I was able to repay my dad's hard toil."

메이저 대회에서 우승한 기분이 어떤지 물어봤다.

We asked how it felt to win a major tournament.

“대 회를 마치고 신지애·김영·서희경 프로와 같은 비행기를 타고 왔어요. 공항에 도착하니까 김영 언니가 바깥을 내다보더니 ‘은희야. 네가 먼저 나가야겠다. 지금 바깥에 사람들이 무척 많이 왔다’고 말해주더군요. ‘확실히 메이저 우승이 좋긴 좋구나’ 하는 생각이 들었어요.”

"After the tournament, I came back on the same plane as Shin Jiyai, Kim Young and Seo Hee Kyoung. After arriving at the airport, Kim Young said to me after looking outside, 'Eun Hee, I think I'll get out first. There are a lot of people out there right now.' I thought "winning a major is good, isn't it?'."

다음 목표는 뭘까.

What is your next goal?

“최고 권위를 자랑하는 브리티시여자오픈에서 우승하고 싶어요. 그리고 꼭 한번 상금왕을 하고 싶어요.”

"I want to win the prestigious British Open. Then I want to be the money leader at least once."
