Flying The Friendly Skies With Ji Yai Shin

Shin Ji-yai Given First-Class Flight Privileges Again

Korean Air said Thursday that it will continue to provide Shin Ji-yai, who won the U.S. LPGA's Rookie of the Year award this year, with first-class seats until November 2010.

The airline offered Shin the same sponsorship for 2009.

The Korean golf champ can use the privilege on all flights operated by the nation's biggest carrier to travel for international competitions.

my take:

Now, this seems like a good story...

...but...

...this sounds like it also means Ji Yai will continue to maintain a travel schedule back and forth across the Pacific to try to play on three tours...I think that hurt her this year. Maybe with the limited LPGA schedule in 2010, it won't be as bad, but if...or I should say, when...the LPGA goes back to a fuller schedule...I just think at some point she should consider reducing her peripatetic approach to her tournament selections...she wore down and even fell ill this year, I think due to a too rigorous travel schedule...

...just a suggestion...

Another article about Ji Yai's sponsorship and earnings...Dow Chemicals? Why would they sponsor a golfer? Hmmm...I'll have to look that up...

Dow makes household cleaning products and the like, maybe she would be used in promotion of them? The Dow logo is fairly familiar in the US, so you would see it on TV coverage of her shots.

Basically golfer's sponsorships are strange to me. Except for a few like Tiger, I don't see many TV ads with the golfer. Even with Tiger, as we read about his various sponsors I don't recall any association I can recall seeing (Gatorade for example). So they must do print ads, or corporate functions? Or is the TV logo coverage enough to be worthwhile?

My company sponsors a race car, so every picture of that person or car the logo is clear. You see it during the race as well. Also they do quite a bit of trade shows (they have a mock up of the car they can take around). I expect we package some products with containers having the NASCAR logo and picture of the driver or car.

Paula Creamer has been in print ads lately for Citizen watches in mainstream magazines. The first time I can remember a female golfer in print advertising in a non-golfing publication, other than Annika.

Also famous, or infamous, for making napalm and the target of protests during the Vietnam War for that reason.

Maybe they make the fabric for the monotonous White Shin Slacks uniform.

I do know more about Dow than I lead on, I got a job offer from them once. I just thought some of the more industrial products (non-consumer) products would not benefit from sponsoring an LPGA player as so few viewers would be purchasing agents for these things. I though some of their brands know to everyone would benfit (don't they make Glad bags?).

Good list you came up with....
