Dow Chemical called vets baby killers? I wasn't aware of that.

I was referring to a big riot that took place on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison in the late 1960s. It was key moment in the history of the 1960s and highlighted the polarization of views toward the War in Vietnam. Dow was on campus recruiting future scientists and managers. Students protested because Dow manufactured napalm which was being used at the time in Vietnam which they apparently objected to.

The riot is known in a lot of history books as the "Dow Riot." Dow Chemical will probably be forever associated with this political event.

I don't think any friends of mine ever did that. I was a young child during the Vietnam War so I didn't have any friends who were either protesting or fighting. I do know that the war, like all wars, caused a lot of pain on all sides. The father of a friend of mine was killed in an anti-war protest. He was an innocent bystander.

My father is a WW2 veteran and he emerged from that war a liberal pacifist, never again wanting to see the death and destruction he experienced as a young man. I can assure you, he would never, ever call a soldier a baby killer.

I would hope eventually we can have a day where humans and nations don't have to settle their differences with guns.

Back to Jiya and flying first class on Korean Air. I would have thought she qualified for first class just from the mileage, but I am guess they are saying she flies first class for free (not just an upgrade).

Yes...these are free first class tickets...but unfortunately, IMO, I think she plays too much trying to play a handful of events on both the KLPGA and JLPGA while trying to play full time on the LPGA...

...but she did win three times on the LPGA and once on the JLPGA in 2009...

...and doing the three tour challenge in 2008 she won 7 times on the KLPGA (actually down from 9 in 2007), 3 times on the LPGA including the British Open and ADT, and 2 times on the JLPGA...

...so what do I know...I guess she's doing just fine...but she did fight fatigue and sickness this year...her two main tours in previous years, the KLPGA and JLPGA, were closer to each other than New York and Miami...now that her main tour is on the other side of the Pacific than those two others...I dunno...

I flew 1st class to Thailand once, really nice fold down chair. But I spent too much time watching videos on the nice screen. I should have tried sleeping more. So I arrived really out of sorts.

LPGA Rookie Sensation Jiyai Shin Joins Dow Golf Team

Published: December 28,2009

MIDLAND, Mich. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) and Dow Electronic Materials today announced a sponsorship with LPGA rookie sensation Jiyai Shin. She joins LPGA TOUR player Suzann Petersen and PGA TOUR players Sean O'Hair and Corey Pavin in representing Dow and promoting Dow products that bring value to the golf market.

"We are very proud of our relationships with Suzann, Sean, Corey, and now Jiyai," said Mike Kolleth, Dow's global director of advertising and brand. "The personal and professional merit of these athletes make them very credible voices for Dow and allow us to promote the Dow brand to another key influential group in a unique and non-traditional way."

Dr. Yi Hyon Paik, business group vice president for Dow Electronic Materials, said sponsoring Jiyai Shin is a natural fit for his business. "Dow Electronic Materials has a significant presence and customer base in Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and other Asian countries. We're honored to partner with Jiyai, an exciting player from Korea who has captured the attention of fans around the world," said Paik.

Jiyai Shin currently plays on the LPGA Tour and the LPGA of Korea Tour (KLPGA). In only three years as a professional golfer, Shin has secured 29 wins. In 2008, she won her first LPGA Tour major at the Women's British Open in Berkshire, England. Her performance in 2009, which included three wins and a dozen top 10 finishes, earned her the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award. She also finished the season as the leading LPGA money winner.

"It is such a joy to be associated with such a world renowned company like Dow," said Shin. "They are already doing so many wonderful things for the game of golf, so I would like to do my best to support Dow in any way that I can as well."

Dow and the PGA TOUR
