Joyce Wilcox fun advice 2 putting drill

Joyce Wilcox is a teaching professional and an LPGA Class A Member.

For those golfers who have to deal with the cold winter months and can't play very often; I would first recommend finding a place outside or in the house where you can swing a golf club to stay loose. Ride a bike, take long walks, exercise at a gym, or swim in a pool are all exercises for the winter months to keep your body in shape. Golf is more athletic than people think; so if during the winter you can lose some weight (if needed), strengthen your muscles, increase your flexibility and endurance, you will be ahead of the game.

Indoors is also a place you can practice putting; with a putting carpet or regular indoor outdoor smooth carpeting. The object to practice putting is first and foremost to practice the correct fundamental set up (routine) and to make the pendulum motion over and over again the same way each time. How you grip or hold the club is personal preference; tour players use traditional, left low, the "claw," the "saw," or the long putter with one hand at the top braced into your chest and the other much lower. All are successful in their own way with various players and that needs to be determined individually.

The pendulum motion is deemed by many to be the most efficient stroke; the shoulders drive it while the wrists are passive and quiet. I find too many students have a wristy motion which breeds inconsistency. The pendulum motion takes time to learn and to feel comfortable. Please remember that nothing new feels comfortable at first. You must repeat the same thing in the same way multiple times in order to "learn" a new behavior.

One drill I like to do on the putting carpet is to set two soup cans side by side (two ball widths apart from each other) approximately two feet from the ball you will be putting. Then put two more soup cans about a foot behind the first two in the same manner. Try to putt the ball through the two sets of cans without hitting any can. Given that you placed the cans two ball widths apart you know that a ball will go through with ease. Now it is up to you to practice it. When ready, place a target on the other side to hit; then close the gap between the cans to one and a half balls and have fun.
