Yes.

It's one thing for a no-name drunken idiot in a bar to say something like that. It's another thing for a public figure to say it.

He's also a moron to speak on behalf of all the soldiers in Iraq and say that they would shoot the leader of the Senate and the House. He wasn't giving his own opinion, which would be controversial enough.

Yes, he has the right. Yes, CBS also has the right to fire his ass. He can go work at Fox now where he will fit right in.

I like David Feherty and think he's a talented humorous commentator. However, he stepped way beyond the bounds of humor or "freedom of speech" in his attempt to make a joke....one which wasn't even original, as has been mentioned. Change the names to whomever you 'hate' and that's the joke? Really stupid.

It is utterly unacceptable for anyone to make remarks suggesting that our soldiers would turn into political assassins and kill ANY duly elected leaders of our country...no matter WHICH party they represent. Assassination "jokes" are never very funny. Those who think so can join the ranks of the David Feherty School for Morons.

He is paid to be outrageous. Thats his job. He should not have to censor himself.

Whatever he writes must be approved by an editor. The editor let it go. It should be the editors responsability not his.

He is always pushing the line and speaking his mind. Whats wrong with that. The one thing I like about him is that Tiger refuses to speak with him, because he did not kiss Tigers feet. However I have always found his act boring.

And for all of those that dislike what he said, shall we bring out all of the things that have been said about Bush from mainstream comics and celebrities.

As opposed to working alongside those "impartial" reporters at the New York Times, huh? Or, say, Keith Olberman?

Again, would you be as indignant had he said the same thing about Palin? Somehow, I doubt it.

I agree that assassination jokes aren't funny. On the other hand, wanting someone fired for saying anything is petty. I realize that Liberals don't care much for the Constitution, but he has the right to make jokes, funny or not.

I didn't say I wanted him fired. I said it was CBS's right to fire him.

Two different things.

Personally I don't care what CBS does. I'll watch golf whether it's Feherty, Donald Trump or my neighbor's dog Spot (he's certainly loud enough) doing the color commentary.

Oh, and by the way, the U.S. Constitution says nothing about protecting Feherty from being criticized for saying inflammatory things or for being punished, even fired, by his employer for saying those things or for pretty much any reason they want. I like the Constitution a lot, which is why it bothers me when it's misquoted or thrown around as an excuse to prohibit the free actions of a private company. Hmm, I'm starting to sound like a Republican.

It might have been more appropriate for you to ask if it would have bothered me less if the bullets had been directed at a Republican rather than at a Democrat.

Why is everything with you couched in gender terms? With all due respect, are you that insecure?

(gosh, I love it that Rusty took the reigns off us moderators ...)
Insecure? No, not at all, I just thought that since you are a female, that David's joke about a female in power getting mowed down by bullets probably hit home harder than if the bullets in the joke were directed at a male in power.

Who said anything about impartiality?
I said he'd fit in better at Fox News. Their editorial angle seems to fit with his.

If Sarah Palin were somehow Speaker of the House or Senate Majority we'd be in one hell of a mess, but we survived Gingrich so I guess anything's possible.

But seriously, yes, of course. If he said the same thing about an elevator and putting a bullet in Speaker Palin's head, of course. It's just really dumb to make assassination jokes on behalf of 10,000 or so other people and then to name names.

Here's the original joke: What will you do if you got stuck in an elevator with Osama Bin Laden, a rattle snake and Gxer and you have only two bullets in you gun? Answer: I'll shoot Gxer in the head twice!
