Safeway Classic , Aug 20-22

Good morning all.
Just a quick post to let you know that we'll be heading up to Oregon (and away from the fog) for this one. If you'd like to say hello - I'll be the old bag with a black CVS cap on that has lots of LPGA pins on it. I'm toting a laptop and will post reports as I can. Barring any last minute WDs or injuries, the final field looks great. Let me know if there is any player you'd like me to extend greetings to or to report on.

She's a sweetheart, isn't she? If I can, I'll wish her good luck.

We've just arrived - don't ask - delay out of SFO.

The weather here is gorgeous, the traffic was congested, and our motel is packed with caddies - ha! One out of 3 ain't bad. Now a swim, then dinner and a concert tonight - then it's over to PR early tomorrow. Will post as I can.

Will do. Likely I'll be following Dorothy, but I'll look for Jen at the practice area.

Wish I had known that. I talked to Jen on the 14th hole today.

On the 11th hole, I saw two near aces. Rachel Hetherington's shot landed 15 feet in front of the hole and rolled over the right edge of the cup before ended up four feet away. Gloria Park's shot hit 20 feet short of the hole and rolled 10 feet past the hole, before backing up over the left lip of the cup. Hers ended up about six inches away.

Christina Kim's team was red hot to start out. After 10 holes, they were 14 under par, making birdies on all the par 3 and par 4 holes, and eagles on all the par 5 holes. They cooled off and finished only 17 under for the round. Yesterday, Iben Tinning's group was 20 under and Ai Miyazato's team was 18 under. They did play different tees and pin placements.

The course is in pretty good condition, but seems dried out in spots due to the hot weather last week. Greens will be fast.

Got a trading card from Stephanie Louden, a member of Team Smuckers. She said that all mothers belong to this group. When I asked Hee Won Han if she was a member, she did confirm that she got cards also. They had a group picture taken yesterday, so there might publicity about it in the near future.

Friday Report

Just back in the hotel now. As planned, we arrived at the course early, grabbed breakfast, then off I went on 10 with Dorothy, Soo-Yun and Sarah. There was only one other spectator with us - a Wednesday pro-am partner of Soo-Yun's who enjoyed his pro-am experience so much that he decided to follow her today. That was nice to hear.

Dorothy had her Portland cousin on her bag - a golf coach himself, and to me a big asset for her. (Keeping her focused, e.g.) Her play was exciting to watch, beginning with a birdie, making the turn with a birdie, and playing steady golf throughout. Checking scorecards, you can see that the Soo-Yun had 1 lone birdie and lots of others, while Sarah could not keep an even round goling. Birdies were out there - the day warmed up, the winds were not too much of a bother - more aggressive play was in order. Dorothy further distinguished herself by besting her playing partners on 18 (and a few others) as she drove her ball 285yds, with the others 10 to 15 yrds back. Also, she chipped in on the 7th hole, which was timed just right, since she played the hole dangerously close to ob on the left side of the fairway, and needed some kind of miracle.

Spouse walked with K Hull, Anna N. and A. Munoz. He reports that Katherine's round was steady, but unremarkable, Anna had a string of nicely played holes, and Azahara had too many bogeys to go with scant birdies. Tomorrow, he's planning to walk with me. :)
