LPGA Tour Championship

Lorena Ochoa scored a first-round 66 Thursday to hold a one-shot lead in the LPGA's season-ending Tour Championship.

Ochoa was one shot in front of Reilley Rankin, and nothing at the top was set to change when the four groups who failed to finish because of darkness returned to complete their rounds on Friday morning.

Michelle Wie, fresh from her first professional triumph at the Ochoa-hosted LPGA event in Mexico last week, was hampered by a sprained left ankle as she shot a 72.

Wie, who first hurt her ankle at the Solheim Cup in August, said she was going for treatment after her round and could withdraw.

Ochoa, the world number one who is trying to add to her three straight Player of the Year awards, teed off early before the winds picked up.
She is four shots in front of Jiyai Shin (70), the South Korean who has already wrapped up Rookie of the Year honors and brought an eight-point lead over Ochoa in the Player of the Year race into the tournament.

For Ochoa to earn a fourth consecutive player of the year title, she must win this week or finish no worse than third and hope Shin places out of the top 10.

Ten players did not finish Thursday's round. I was behind the 9th green and did not think the last three groups would make it, but some must have decided that it was better to finish in the semi-darkness than return in morning to finish out. Mikaela Parmlid hit her second shot and missed the 9th green short right. She then marked her ball to return on Friday morning. Her playing partners finished the hole. The final group starting the back side did not tee off on #8 so they will have to go back out to play the 8th and 9th holes. On the other side, two groups will have to go out and play the 17th and 18th holes to complete the first round.

Heavy rain is forecast for Friday, so it is doubtful that the second round will be started. If that is the case then the tournament will end on Monday.

Anyone (coug?) know why Candie Kung, Seon Hwa Lee, and Silvia Cavallieri WD?

All had lousy scores (78,79,81), but is there some "official" reason?

No one noticed because they're not Michelle Wie.

No one is being criticized because they're not Michelle Wie.

Nice pictures BKB.

When the Tour Championship was first announced as a full field tournament in Houston in late November, one of things people discussed here was the lack of daylight at that time of year and the challenge of fitting so many players in, coupled with the likelihood for rain at that time of year. Another of Carolyn Bivens' brilliant moves.

Maybe they should end the year in the Golden State! I'm sure the players would be on board with that...maybe Southern Cal...
