Indeed. And here is video and print of the official announcement: Farr back for 26th year

I am not the kind to pile on and on and on our former Commish, but I found this statement very telling:

"It's a great day for the community," Silverman said. "After 25 years we wanted to do everything possible to bring the tournament back. Thanks to Owens Corning and Kroger for leading the way, and thanks to the LPGA and their willingness to work with us to find a livable business model that both organizations can be successful with."

"The new leadership really came in with a new attitude and did not want to lose this tournament off their schedule," Silverman added. "They were very willing to accommodate us. Both sides are going to move forward feeling very good at where we are at."

I wonder how many tournaments could still be with us had there been more flexible negotiations.

Even though the purse is reduced, there is a lot to be said for keeping an old tournament in a part of the country where there aren't a lot of tournaments and for the maintaining and building a strong relationship between the sponsor, the tournament and the LPGA. Hopefully, this is just a temporary setback the purse will increase again in coming years.

My favorite part of the Jamie Farr is that so many of the players have stayed in the homes of the locals over the years and are on first name terms with them. It is really cool to see groups of neighbors following their player that they probably have shared a barbeque with the previous night.
Beyond that , if Se Ri ever decides to run for mayor of Toledo, she is a shoe in. She is their Queen.
Small market events like this are the heart and soul of the LPGA.

I have to disagree on this one. It took a decade for the Farr's purse to increase from 1 million to 1.4 million, and now that it is back down to 1 million how long will it take to reach 1.4 million again? Another decade? Or more? Facts are facts and the facts clearly state that this event has difficulties in good times let alone in bad ones. Either a new sponsor with deeper pockets needs to be found or maybe this event would be better off ending. Just because an event was good for the tour 10 or 20 years ago doesn't mean it still is a good fit for the tour now, or the community it's in either. I'm concerned with reducing purses like this, it can set a bad precident. There's a saying, give an inch and they take a mile, well that applies here. How many more events will want reduced purses now? The tour has already done it for now the Farr, Navistar, and CVS what's next?

It's better to have a reduced purse than none at all.

So that's 3 mil and 3 tournaments as opposed to 0 and 0. Maybe 1.4 was too much and not sustainable. Plus these are full field events. Look at the one of the problems this year, along period of time without full field events this summer. That was a not good for many of the players that are not in the limited field events. Imagaine 3 less full field events. Where are the midlle of the pack players supposed to play.

The key is, are the players complaining about it. It don't think so. Sure they would like to play for as much as possible, but I am sure that they are glad that they are back.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one MP and xman5. This sets a bad precident where future events may want the same thing. Where do we draw the line? What really needs to happen is that every event needs to be evaluated to see if it is still a good fit, not only for the tour but also for the event itself. The Farr has been struggling for sometime now, even before the economy went into the crapper. I'm concerned more events may use the Farr for leverage for purse decreases. I wonder how many events would threaten to leave if their purse isn't reduced? Before the Farr and the other events i mentioned, probably not many, after, not so sure. I don't share the sentiment that a reduced purse is better than none, now if we were talking about 5-6 million dollar purses, then yes i might agree, but these events are no where near those figures. I just don't like the future precident this is setting up.

I think the "price" or "value" of many things have been "reset" about 10 years due to this recession. Housing prices are one. Sporting event existence and pricing might also need to reset depending on the depth of the pockets of the league. Last winter the NBA team lowered its prices. This summer the Senior Championship in town was free (no admission at all) - though they found a new sponsor to take up the slack. I suspect the NFL might be able to weather the storm, but a franchise that is struggling at all is probably considering what to do to bring the fan back in the door.

If there were tournaments and venues clamoring to take the Farr time slot I suspect they would have come forward. I am sure the LPGA would love a bidding war to start. But than ain't happenin....
