2012 Australian Women's Open

I see this is now added to the LPGA tournaments for 2012. A full field tourney with prize money of $1 million. Finally a reasonable purse. It's being played February 6 - 12th at Royal Melbourne - a challenging sandbelt course. It'll be part of the three tournament swing: Oz, Thailand and the HSBC Singapore.

I suspect this might change a few plans for the start of the year.

About time!

Now there's no excuse for the US LPGA players to skip it due to "travel."

I never understood that reasoning, either. Don't they also have to travel to Thailand and Singapore?

Great to see another event added, but it looks like they may need more new announcements cause it's looking like there will be less events next year. I organized this list on another computer but I don't have the info with me now so it may be wrong.

Looks like 21 events to me if we exclude Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge and include the 2 unsure events in November. Not a good sign.

Hey Coolfish1103...were you born November 3rd or November, 1903?

Jamie Farr's tournament in Toledo is under contract for 2012 thru 2015 - no date has been announced yet. Also, don't count out Springfield, IL for 2012, although they may not have a title sponsor. The organizers figure they need at least $2.3M in sponsor money to have a tournament and I think they will get that. In addition, there is a new Canadian tournament in Waterloo scheduled for June 18-24.

I can add them on to the list but are those tournaments confirmed or at least have some news links anywhere? I am not sure if the Springfield one will come back after the pull out of State Farm though? But even adding these two tournaments will only make equivalence of this year's tournament?

The Toledo tournament was cancelled for 2011 because of the US Senior Open being scheduled for Inverness. The same local group was responsible for both. According to news reports, Toledo is contracted through 2015, but no dates have been published. If you google Waterloo LPGA, you will get the info on that tournament.

I am familiar with the infrastructure in Springfield and have also read reports stating that Whan wants a tournament in Springfield in 2012 and will do whatever the LPGA needs to do. He has indicated that he will save a spot for the tournament until the local committee tells him they can't find sponsors to put up the money. The local group is trying to find a title sponsor for 2012, but Whan would also accept a group of presenting sponsors.

I've also read somewhere that Danville, CA wants to stay on the schedule and is working hard to find funding to replace CVS.

The new tournament in Canada is the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. It will be held in Waterloo, Ontario from June 18-24.

Looks like the Founders Cup has learned that they must provide a real purse for golf players to participate cause the mock purse of 1 million did not work in 2011.

LPGA.com

From the article, it seems like the new Founders Cup goes to 1.5 million purse and $0 goes to charity. Another 500k is directly contributed to the USGA after the event has commenced.

Also, it goes from 3 days -> 4 days.
