Nicole Castrale Recovery From Surgery

Nicole Castrale recovering from shoulder surgery

LARRY BOHANNAN • AUGUST 12, 2010

Nicole Castrale is expected to make a full recovery from the shoulder surgery she had five weeks ago, even though the Palm Desert golfer is still almost two months away from putting again.

“Honestly, I don't have a lot of free time,” Castrale said from Phoenix, where she is starting her rehabilitation from surgery that ended her golf season.

“Basically, I'm up at 6 a.m., I'm here (at the rehabilitation center) at 7, and I'm here until 11:30 or 12, for about four or five hours. After that I'm pretty much wiped out,” Castrale said. “I'm definitely not just sitting at home waiting for the shoulder to heal itself.”

Five weeks after surgery to repair a torn labrum and other problems in her left shoulder, Castrale is just now starting to loosen up the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the joint.

Based on your experience, although they say she will make a full recovery, is there any reason to think she might have to change her swing? As we've seen, players can take a while adjusting to a new swing.

She shouldn't have to change her swing one bit.
It takes a while to get comfortable swinging full out.

Larry Bohannan follows up with another article on Nicole:

A two-time Solheim Cup member for the United States and a winner of the 2007 Ginn Tribute, Castrale staggered through the 2010 season. She earned $21,896 in nine tournaments while fighting what turned out to be a torn labrum in her left shoulder.

On July 1, Castrale underwent a 90-minute surgery at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles performed by Dr. Ronald Kvitne. The surgery not only repaired the labrum — a cuff of cartilage that stabilizes the shoulder — but also repaired a tear in a rotator cuff muscle, shaved down some bone near Castrale's collarbone, broke through some scar tissue from the 2004 surgery and removed a ligament.
