Dottie Pepper

...always fiery and opinionated...interviewed by Jeff Rude from last year...

Dottie has always been one of my favorites, both as a comptitor and a broadcaster. Thanks for posting this clip.

I second that, that is a great clip. With a temper, one very smart babe... ah x-women professional LPGA golf player. Heh. :-)

She has a point of keeping more LPGA events in the Americas.... less Jet Lag time travel, and easier to fit into a years regular schedule. Overseas ok.... but when it makes sense. And 'that', Dot has in spades.... and peppers. :-)

She got in trouble on air a while back (2 Solheims ago) ... "choking freeking dogs" I think was the term. She was correct of course but TV people have to be careful what they say even if they think the mics are off.

She gave my then young daughter one of her golf balls (used and she was changing to a new ball) when they still had an LPGA tournament in our area. My now 22 yr old daughter still cherishes that ball. She really did not take up golf, but still remembers this event fondly.

That's a great story...although she didn't take up golf...does she follow the tour at all?

You know, I actually disagree with Dottie's opinion on the globalization of the tour...I think the LPGA should do MORE to bring in sponsors and events worldwide, particularly in places like Asia where the fever for women's golf seems more widespread than here...one reason the WTA was able to weather the financial crisis better than the LPGA is that the WTA is a true global tour...they promote a wide array of players and were able to replace sponsors that dropped out with others...I know tennis and golf are apples and oranges but I think there is more money and long term commitments out there on the world stage the LPGA should pursue ALONG with trying to shore up business at home...

...I disagree that it's a temporary fix...temporary fixes can happen just as well in the States, such as when the LPGA courted the money and backing of Bobby Ginn, losing a long time sponsor in the process...when Bobby Ginn dropped out, well...at least that ship looks to be righted...but it should never have happened the way it did in the first place...

...but whatever the LPGA does on the world stage, it MUST be televised here in the States...even on delay if necessary...

...anyway, speaking "choking freaking dogs", here it is:

The daughter in question was in college the last 4 years and really has not followed the LPGA (or any sport or TV - locked up in the academia bubble). I only became a devotee in the last 4 years - and even very serious only in this last year since finding myLPGA.com. This summer she was around and probably sat with me for some events when they were on TV. Maybe next summer I can get her out again before she heads of to graduate school.

Dottie Pepper on the LPGA

By Dottie Pepper
Published: February 16, 2010

It's still early, but it feels as if new boss Mike Whan has turned around the ailing LPGA tour. How? Plain talk, availability, energy (his staff calls him Flash) and history, both his own and the tour's. Check it out. After a long, successful stint at the PGA Tour, Jon Podany will become the LPGA's chief marketing officer. In 1983 Whan and Podany were walk-on freshman quarterbacks at Miami (Ohio), and both went on to work at Proctor and Gamble.

Bill Susetka, who stepped down as the tour's chief marketing officer last May, was elected chairman of the board last week, and Kathy Milthorpe, the LPGA's highly respected CFO from 1999 to 2005, will return to that position on March 1. On the business front, Sybase has come back into the LPGA fold as a title sponsor (a match play event at Hamilton Farms in New Jersey), and Kia has signed on for a one-year title sponsorship of the new J Golf event at La Costa. Whan and the tour have dipped into the past, and the future already looks brighter.
