| I think I heard on TV today that Lexi's parents are going to petition the LPGA tour on Lexi's behalf to obtain an age exemption so that she can enter LPGA q-school this year. Do you think Smiley Whan will grant Lexi an age exemption?

This thread really took off. Did anyone else hear the announcers mention that Alexis Thompson plans to petition the LPGA for early membership and head to Q-school ? They definitely spoke of it ;whether it was (their) speculation as to what she might do,or they were reporting what she is going to do,I couldn't tell. I should have listened more intently, but one can only listen to Johnny Miller's ramblings for so long before your brain switches off. So,what say ye to the idea of giving her early membership ?... In answer to the ? regarding petitioning for an age exemption.... No, I do not think Whan should allow it. Not at this point and not at her age now. There have been others who have asked for an age exemption and who have been denied....Morgan Pressel comes to mind. She'd won the US Women's Amateur, and had finished runner up in the 2005 Women's Open (Cherry Hills...Birdie Kim chip in win), but was only 17+ at the time. She was denied the age exemption. I think Aree Song was another one who asked for an age exemption...can't remember how that came out, but I think she was 18 by the time she became an LPGA member in any case. Anyhow....no...no...no....IMO. However, since the LPGA is sucking air for a fresh new "American" face, maybe he'll cave. I hope not. Rules is Rules. |

It was granted by Ty Votaw. Fat lot of good it did her in the long run. I don't know the circumstances surrounding Morgan Pressel ;but I thought she was granted LPGA membership before she turned 18,as well. If they wanted to grant Alexis Thompson an age exemption, they could cite precedent. Although,I don't see the point of having rules if they aren't adhered to... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

Morgan was granted a convoluted age exemption by Votaw bordering on lawyerly lunacy which was corrected by Bivens for the 2006 season. Basically, Votaw refused to let Morgan join the LPGA tour as a full member until she turned 18, even though she breezed through q-school in 2005, plus any of her earnings before she turned 18 would not be official LPGA tour earnings because she would not be a member until she turned 18, in May of 2006. Bivens threw Votaw's BS decision into the toilet where it belonged and granted Morgan full membership at the beginning of the 2006 season.

Yeah, rules is rules, but Smiley can, under the rules, grant an age exemption at his discretion.

Why was each case handled differently ? Song was granted the age exemption without any fuss ;Pressel's exemption came with some drama attached. Of course, neither of them should have been granted. It wouldn't have killed them both to wait until May of their respective debut seasons... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

As for adhering to the rules. It is in the rules that exemptions can be given. So it is not breaking the rules to give age exemptions. They are handled on a case-by-case basis. I doubt Whan will go as low as 16 to give one to Thompson, but I'm sure he's looking closely at not only how she performs in tournaments this year but how she handles other aspects of being a pro. That's also in the rules. |

The entire notion of unofficial money from February to May was absurd. |
