Wie finished T3rd in the WBO as an Amateur in 2005. It would have been nice to have Lexi in the WBO, but the LGU chose to abide by its Rules, and any exemption she had was forfeited. Hindsight is 20/20. |

By the way, I think I posted the rules somewhere in another thread and in section 6, sub-section i of the LGU's own rules, they could have granted an exemption to final qualifying if they wanted to, but they didn't want to for some reason. It doesn't matter now, what's done is done and next year I am sure, barring injury or illness, Lexi will be in the field for the WBO. Well, that is if she wants to, perhaps she'll take a pass and enter the PGA TOUR's Reno/Tahoe event instead, just for fun of course.

I am not sure, plus I don't want to take the time to find out, but it could be that several of them were no shows for the qualifier and that caused the DQ.

Here another writer's take on Lexi and the WBO. By the way, here is the CEO of the LGU so you can relate a name to a face. ![]() Shona Malcolm CEO --------------------------------------- What's got to be frustrating for Thompson is that she doesn't even have the opportunity to play her way into the tournament. Why? Because the Ladies Golf Union, the organizing body which oversees the Open, for some insane reason scheduled pre-qualifying the day after the U.S. Women's Open. So here she is, with no exemption into final qualifying and no chance to have played in pre-qualifying. The Ladies Golf Union has flat-out denied Thompson's petition to play in the qualifying tournament. "Exemptions into final qualifying for professionals are not the norm," Shona Malcolm, the LGU’s CEO, told Golfweek's Sean Martin in an email. "The main circumstances would be medical exemptions or, occasionally and very exceptionally, players of reputation who had previously been long-term participants in, supporters of or winners of the Ricoh Women’s British Open." Now, it's obvious why golf officials are being a bit measured in their response to Thompson's hot start. The last thing anyone wants is a repeat of the Michelle Wie situation, where a kid was hyped to the heavens and didn't immediately perform. Thompson has done well early on, but there's no indication it'll sustain. (None that it won't, either. Ya never know, do ya?) So the Thompson camp is going to have to take this one on the chin and move forward. If she keeps playing at this level, this British Open snub is going to be nothing but a faint memory before too much longer. Look at the bright side, gxer. She does have nearly $315,000 in the bank as a result of turning pro. She's missing the British Open, but she can now buy that new car she wanted. She could even buy a house (depending on the location) or if she decides to go to college in a few years, she has enough to pay for that and maybe some left over for textbooks and beer. Not bad for three week's work.

Morgan wanted to win so much that she forgot to enjoy the competition and that might have been her downfall the last 8 holes. Anyway, what I hope is that the adults in Lexi's life don't screw up Lexi's enjoyment of competing by making too much of an issue over money won, just let her compete and what happens money-wise, happens.

Blue is right. Lexi chose to take the $$ and give up her Amateur status. Don't blame the LGU for choosing not to give her an exemption into final qualifying. I see you're getting thoroughly lambasted over on the psycho board (Golf Channel DG) over your obsession with this issue. (Your thread "Lexi Denied Chance To qualify WBO.") Even the most ardent "anti-Wie" fans are ripping you for wanting the same entitlement that you continually griped about Wie getting. Funny. Or should I say....*giggles* She's got $300k+ and can't play this week. Oh well. |
