Sybase?

When do you guys start your contests? The day of the tournament?
I don't see anything on Sybase. I'd love to join in

Ok, I just went to the blog and got the rules.
When is it smart to also pick the winner? You say that's optional, but you gain points.
Why would it be optional? Now the dummy question...is there a strategy or should I just go by feel?

It's optional because it's a risk reward. If you pick someone who finishes high, you get points taken off your score, but if you pick someone who performs poorly, you get them added and if they miss the cut even more get added. And if you don't pick anyone, no points gained, no points lost. The winner pick is really a game of strategy!

ok, but i thought you don't have to pick until after the cut... so why not wait until then and increase your chances? one more thing... does the statistician (you) pick a winner? that'll tell me if it's worth risking...
thanks and looking forward to the challenge

We pick a winner at the first round of picks, when you make your picks for these first two rounds you have to include them then. We do it now because it increases the risk-reward aspect. I always pick one (but not very well). Some people pick one (most do) and some don't.

Everyone plays by the same rules, even the statisticians (DJ and me). We have no advantage over anyone else. Why don't we pick until the after cut? Because that would be too easy! You get 5 points added to your score if your player misses the cut. For a while this was a rarity, but lately it's been happening more.

The main strategy for picking the winner is to understand the point splitting.

Also there are extra points in some categories for majors.

Please let me know if the rules on the blog site are confusing and I'll clear them up.

Have fun!
