Well put, Buzzer. Where's Lojo? I'd like to hear her take on this one.

Exactly! I understand now that Phil is really pissed about having been called a "cheat"...and rightly so.

It is not up to McCarron to "interpret" the intention or the "spirit" of the Rules. He plays with a long putter, which many feel violates the "spirit of the rules" too, giving an advantage by being able to anchor the putter against the body (presumably to help those such as McCarron with the twitchy yips).

I'd venture a guess that if it's such a big advantage for Phil to use the old Eye 2's, we'll soon find out when he starts beating the likes of Scott McCarron. Oh wait....he already does that, doesn't he?

I have a set of Ping Eye 2 Beryllium Copper irons, circa 1986, in my garage....1 iron through the SandWedge. I knew someday they'd be valuable...haha.

Thanks for weighing in on this, Lojo. I was thinking along the same lines as Buzzer, but I know that, as our resident rules guru, you'd be able to varify it.

Watching the play today - Phil needs a driver and putter more than old wedges.

Thinking about putters, wasn't there, several years ago, a veteran (Sam Snead, maybe) who made a putter that was used almost like a croquet mallet? It was ruled illegal, if I recall correctly, and quickly disappeared.

I had never thought about the long putters being a violation of the "spirit of the rules," but I can definitely see an argument for it. It certainly doesn't conform to what we normally think of a putter.

Exactly MP. Nothing Phil has done here violates the rules in any way. After all it's not up to the players to interpret the rules, thats what the USGA is for. Second, the PING wedges in question are still readily available. You might have to go to ebay but they are still readily available if other players wanted to have them. The USGA really messed up on this one. What they should have done is to create a standard ball that is 15-20% shorter than today's ball. That would have worked better than this.

It was Snead. When he stopped being able to putt the normal way, he putted first "croquet style" where he straddled the line of the putt. This was ruled illegal so he then stood next to the ball (parallel to the intended line) in what they often call "straight forward" method. They had to write a rule to address this straddle stance.

The Way Putters-Conformity with USGA Rules

Thanks. It's good to know I still have some memory left. Now, if I could remember where I put those damned glasses.......

Phil didn't break any rules. McCarron is just another whiner. Men's and women's golf is full of them. They blame everyone and everything but themselves when things don't go their way.
