| I had a question about qualifying for the LPGA tour Championship in another topic. Just wondered if you knew the answer. Here the question again, thanks. What if a player wins enough money playing on exemptions to qualify for LPGA tour membership next year, do they also get into the field of the LPGA tour championship this year or not?

I assume you're thinking about Lexi possibly earning enough....yes? My guess is that she would not be qualified. I remember in the past when it was the limited field (32 player) ADT event, one had to be an LPGA member to earn ADT points (similar to PGA FedEx points) to qualify...OR, if a non-LPGA member won one of the majors, they were automatically in. I have no idea now that they've made it a 120 player full field event what the qualifications are other than $ list. Though, it does say 120 LPGA professionals...whatever that means. |

Has a non-member ever played in the season-ending event ? You can see both points of view : if Miss Thompson wins more money than the player who's 120th on the (official) money list, shouldn't that give her the right to play ? On the other hand,as she isn't a member of the LPGA,why should she be anywhere near their tour championship ? Can Hee-Kyung Seo play in it ? She's not a member, but she's won an LPGA tournament, this year... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

It is the LPGA TOUR Championship. So it is for Tour Players. And on the odd chance that a non member wins a major they get to play. This event is a reward for TOUR Players. Hint, Hint, Notice the bolding. |

I happen to agree with the LPGA in this case. I think there should be a season-ending championship that's open only to tour members. I would prefer that the Tour Championship be limited to fewer than the top 120 players but hopefully the top player will emerge the winner at the end of the tournament. It worked out that way last year. I also believe it's true that the LPGA rules are not always logical. One case in point is their rule on "domestic full field" events, earnings in which count toward membership for non-membership. Except domestic also apparently includes Canada and Mexico. And for some reason the US Open does not count. |

The US Open doesn't count because it's not an LPGA event. It's a USGA event. "Domestic" seems to be North American, rather than just the States.

Regarding Seo....I doubt she can play since her win wasn't a Major. But who knows? Sometimes the LPGA seems to make up their eligibility criteria as they go along. It's possible Lexi Thompson could get in this tourney if she continues her good play, and if the LPGA 'tweaks' their eligibility requirements to suit their need for including the "next big (American) thing" stuff. They found a way to get an AMATEUR (Wie) into the Ladies PROFESSIONAL Golf Association Championship a few years ago....so anything's possible. |
