As the son of a career Army Officer and having spent 30 years as one myself, and having a son who is a veteran, as a whole our veterans are the best the country has to offer. May those now serving be safe and come back to us having served with honor and in one piece.

My uncle died last week, six years before his 87th birthday which would have been yesterday, Veteran's Day. When we cleaned out his closet, we found just a few items of clothing. Among them was his World War II army sergeant's uniform. At his memorial service most people were surprised to hear that he had been at Okinawa just before the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. He hardly ever talked about it.

Would he have survived a ground war in Japan? He doesn't know of course, but he is thankful he didn't have to find out.
