| Contest Statistician | I do not think it's a bad idea. I highly doubt they would cut the purses in half, but a hundred or 2 hundred thousand less is not that bad. And I do think playing more events for less money is way better than less events for less money. How crappy has this years schedule been? We've been lucky to see them play more than 2 weeks in a row without a week or even 2 week break in between. Are you guys satisfied with that? I'm not. I wanna see them play every week. |

well DJ this is a very fine line to walk. i personally dont want to see them playing for half their purse money in the name of playing more events. it sets a very bad precedent, one that the tour has struggled with before in different forms. i personally don't think the tour should offer to cut purses up front. keep them at the same level, yes, but only offer to reduce if the sponsor asks. plus i think the tour should set a maximum reduction of 250,000 per event. anything more and it risks crossing the line.

Brittany may not have been serious but when you're in a high profile business, you have to be careful what you say. This is not a novel idea but I'd like to see the LPGA approach renewing existing purses and negotiating new purses using a tiered model with some flexibility for the state of the economy. For example, the Wegmans purse is currently at $2 million. It's only been at $2 million for two years. (did not have to Google that -- I remembered. Is dangerbob and his Googlephobia still gone?). It's also in a relatively small market. Not Corning-small, but not LA-huge. So re-sign Wegmans to $2 million for the next five years. Someplace like Corning that's been at $1.5 mllion for a couple years and has said if I recall correctly they would be willing to re-sign for that amount, could be signed for that amount, maybe even with a gradual increase to $2 million over 10 years. The community there is strong and will want a long-term contract. New events in large markets, however, like the J Golf event in Los Angeles, should try to be negotiated at higher amounts. Others that have lost sponsors like Michelob, might require a cut in purse. This is not rocket science. |

I believe that Lincicome is saying that it is better to be playing for a half a purse rather than none, if that is what it takes to keep the tournaments in existence during this year.

Welcome to the site. I think that's exactly what she was saying.

People are reading too much into Brittany Lincicome's comments. It's not like (potential) sponsors are going to approach the new commish and quote Brittany. And,of course,if it comes to playing in a tournament with a 1.5 million dollar purse,or sitting at home and fantasising about non-existent tournaments with 3.0 million dollars purses,I'm sure most golfers would choose the Brittany option. Not compromising is great ;until there's no tour left. Then it becomes self-indulgent and petulant... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

The PGA TOUR has problems as well. ---------------------------- Touring pros Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker might have a grand plan to save professional golf in Milwaukee, but the future of the 42-year-old PGA Tour event depends on one thing: Finding a title sponsor to replace U.S. Bank. Until then, speculation about a date change and perhaps a venue change and Kelly's prediction of a "marquee event" that would draw the top players in the world is just wishful thinking. Although Kelly and Stricker are well-intentioned, their maverick effort blindsided the PGA Tour and tournament officials, who have been searching for months to identify a title sponsor to replace U.S. Bank, which opted not to exercise a three-year option beginning in 2010. I live just north of Milwaukee. The "maverick effort" included getting the date changed next year to early August and then tying the event in with the PGA Championship, to be held some 50+ miles north of Milwaukee at Whistling Straights two weeks later. Their plan is to pitch having all the big guns come and play the Milwaukee event as a tune-up for the PGA. As mentioned in the article, the issue has been the horrible dates assigned to the Milwaukee event. It took a hit this year as far as sponsors withdrawing, but if more people would have attended in previous years, maybe their decision would not have been the same. Crowds of people were more enthusiastic when the tournament used to be held in September but I think sponsor dollars were the reason why it get shifted to be held against the Open. |

still I think it would have been better if she didn't offer that up. I imagine that just may become the starting point in negotiations. Of course it won't end that way but it is now on the table, so to speak.
