Bivens three letters???

A president ceo of a company got fired and left three letters in his office
for the next person.
First letter said when things start to go bad and they will blame it on the previous admin.
The second Letter said blame it on reorganization and that will work for
awhile.
Third letter said prepare three letters.
This is about Bivens reorganizing.

I'm not overly confident in anything Bivens does, but at least she's making it appear that she's trying. Now, we'll have to see who she infuriates next.

I've worked in organizations where they make a big deal of announcing strategic plans and reorganizations. It almost always means one of two things, if not both:

1. The head guy is under the gun and is scrambling to salvage his/her job.

2. The organization is suffering financially and looking for a drastic overhaul to turn things around.

One article has already been retracted,(due to misinformation) this information is common knowledge of what the company (LPGA) is doing to reorganize. Keep in mind you have two writers who are in competition to get out the best story and one up each other and people want to read smut not good news. The reorganization is smart business in poor times. The commish is in no danger of loosing her job or putting off blame to anyone she is working hard to improve the tour and sometimes hard decisions make her look like the bad guy. Some mistakes have been made that she has been slammed in the press for, but people make mistakes, and what I will give her is she takes a punch and keeps doing the job, and thank goodness because if anyone else was in charge making her tough decisions and playing hardball there would be about 10 less events this year. We can't always believe everything we read. :)

Rossi,

Are you saying the article on LPGA.com:

LPGA.com

is incorrect?

It's pretty much word-for-word the same as the story published at Cybergolf News that notaxbill linked to above. Are we not supposed to believe that even though it's on the LPGA's own website?

In my opinion, one of the biggest blunders the commissioner has made has been in not focusing on professional communications and media relations.

You have written here a lot about how Bivens is not understood because all people read is what's written in the media and that's either not the whole story or not the right story.

Well, Bivens has not helped matters. A good organization has a focused and dedicated communications staff that works pro-actively to get out the positive messages of the organization. On the, hopefully rare, occasions, when something negative happens, the team is prepared to counter with the positive message, always staying on point.

The LPGA does not seem to have anything like this in place, or if they do, it is a miserable failure. They are repeatedly in damage control mode and reacting to negative news stories and bad events rather than putting the appropriate pro-active spin on their product.

On top of that, they don't have one skilled tour spokesperson who can speak to the media. It's a mish-mosh of Bivens, on-course officials, interns and god-knows-who, none of whom seem to have specific skill in this area.

Just to give you a few examples of bungled PR just in the last six months:
1. English-language only policy. How could they not anticipate the massive backlash from fans, media, and the business world? Then, how could they not be prepared to quickly defend the policy in a cogent manner?

2. Wie DQ at State Farm. To have an on-course ref come before the media and defend the action was the height of amateurishness. It was not her job and she ended up talking, she rambled on about how she felt when she had to DQ Wie ("like tellng someone there was no Santa Claus"). A college freshman who has passed PR 101 knows you don't bring your own personal emotions into this scenario. Again, where is the head of the LPGA PR and Communications Department?

3. Annika Drug Test at ADT Championship. The wisdon of doing a drug test with a possible playoff looming aside, where was the head of LPGA PR and Communications to calmly defend the policy to the press. Again, we had yet another LPGA rep, Jill Pilgrim who is not familiar to the media and the fans and who is not an expert in dealing with the media. If the LPGA wanted to bring her in for a later expert view, that's fine but to have her as the front line spokesperson is a huge mistake.

And don't even get me started on the silly and insulting part of the web site "Ask Laura" in which the so-called heard of Marketing and Communications used to insult fans who wrote in with questions. My favorite was a response to a, admittedly ignorant fan, in which Laura wrote, "We rock and you don't." OK, maybe but what part of "Keep that to yourself and don't insult the customer" did the LPGA not get?

The fact that Bivens herself is not particularly media savvy (despite her publishing background) and, at least in her early years came across in interviews unprepared to respond to criticism and even defensive when asked tough questions has not helped.

The Bottom Line: The LPGA needs a complete revamping of its Marketing, PR and Communications Department with an emphasis on creating a polished, professonal unified message ot the public and to the media.

It's not fair to just blame the media for getting it wrong. They're only reporting what they see and hear and very often that's a jumbled, incoherent and contradictory mess.

(2009 doesn't look like it's getting off to much of a better start. The LPGA web site is being updated for the 2009 season in fits and starts, filled with more broken links and missing information than with accurate updated information. Again, a college IT or marketing student would know to get the new parts of the site -- new member bios, new tournament info, etc. -- ready in a staging area, make sure it's right, and then port it over to the live site. This approach makes the LPGA look like a joke.)

I think when dealing with the Media and the players and the general public...Carolyn Bivens needs some diplomacy. Maybe she can learn from little Johnnie how diplomacy works:

Little Johnnie's neighbor had a baby. Unfortunately, the baby was born without ears. When the mother and the new baby came home from the hospital, Johnnie's family was invited over to see the baby.
Before they left their house, Little Johnnie's dad had a talk with him and explained that the baby had no ears. His dad also told him that if he so mentioned anything about the baby's missing ears or even said the word ears, he would get the smacking of his life when they came back home. Little Johnnie told his dad he understood completely.

When Johnnie looked in the crib he said, "What a beautiful baby."
The mother said, "Why, thank you, Johnnie."
Johnnie said, "He has beautiful little feet and beautiful little hands, a cute little nose and really beautiful eyes. Can he see alright?" '
"Yes," the mother replied, "we are so thankful; the Doctor said he will have 20/20 vision."
"That's great", said Little Johnnie, "coz he'd be screwed if he needed glasses."

This is my take on the future of the LPGA

First nothing stays the same everything changes.

America is too quickly becoming a third world country.
Financial power is shifting to the east.

I believe next year will see the LPGA dropping more tournaments.

China, Japan, South Korea and other Asian powers will start more tournaments.
Our girls will start getting tons of frequent flier miles.

People like Bivens and other major corp’s will lose their jobs in America.
The names ceo, cfo, will take on new meanings as stock holders demand their corp necks.

Female sports will be the first to be hurt by all that is happening in this country.

Why? Because...

1. Only in America...do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

2. Only in America...do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.

3. Only in America...do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.

4. Only in America...do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the
driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.

5. Only in America...do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.

6. Only in America...do we use the word "polit ics" to describe the process so well: "Poli" in Latin meaning "many" and "tics" meaning "bloodsucking creatures".

7. Only in America...do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. And finally...

8. Only in America...would a former judge install a talking GPS in his Kayak and paddles it around the man-made lake in South Carolina.

Blue, sorry I'm out of the country it's taking a while to reply. The article you are refering to is fine there was another article that was yanked very quickly that hopefully not many saw that had to be retracted for misinformation. I'm telling you there are a few writers who are in competition to get out the best story and they are stretching the facts to make there story the best. It just may not be the one you posted I just want people to keep this in mind.

In response to the other posters the commisioner and her staff are doing everything they can to get through the recession we are having. As far as her job thats up to the board but who can come in and make the progress shes made in this hard time? Her media skills need improvement and she is working hard to improve on that but I hear a lot of the inside talk and this is the business person I'd want working for me. I'm not taking up for the past communication issues shes had but this is a smart business woman and she is working around the clock, and why I don't know she just takes the abuse and keeps working. But people draw there own conclusions about what they read about other people. All I'msaying about the media (in general) is take it with a open mind that not all you read is all the actual.
