Looks like Bivens isn't going to fight to keep her job. Carolyn Bivens reportedly amenable to taking buyout as LPGA commissioner - ESPN

The way I understand it is the LPGA is a non-profit organization playing tournements to raise money for charities with the help of sponsorships. LPGA players are self employed and their pay is based on their level of play. There are some benefits from the LPGA, but they they are not employed by the LPGA. I think Carolyn Bivens was trying to change the face of the LPGA but ran into a few humps in the road... namely THE ECONOMY. Everyone is hurting out here. To me the letter was sophmoric and sent prematurely. If they allow Bivens to take a buyout the LPGA will have to cough up 1 million buck$$. This will surely make the tour fall on it's knees. Who made a mistake this time? |

welcome aboard, but the tour is already on its knees, the question now is it too late. A start would be to go back to Wegmans and Farr (and others) and beg with hat in hand. Cut the scoreboard fee back to what it was. Let them cut purses in the near term 200K. That will save the tournaments 300K. That should allow these tournaments enough room to operate at a profit and provide enough local charitable support. In exchange try to get them to sign longer term deals with the understanding that they will try to put in more money in the future, but don't force them into a corner. Most of these tournaments want to continue and have enjoyed there relationship with the LPGA as has many of the communities. What they need are two leaders. They need a respected front person that can put on the charm on and knows the sport (ie Judy Rankin or Nancy Lopes). They then need a good #2 person who is the actual business person, that does the number crunching and contract work. Thats just my mini plan. One thing is for sure, everyone wanted a way to get some new posters, this has certainly done it. |

Sorry, lslang, it wasn't premature........... It was almost too late. And, it wasn't 'sophomoric' as you put it.................. It was a considered business decision by some of the game's leaders and top players. To make such assessments is to denigrate the intelligence of those people who depend on the LPGA for their livelihood and who actually had the guts to step up and say, "Enough is enough".

First of all, welcome to the site, Islang. I have to disagree, if anything these players should have taken this action several months ago. Far from premature, it's way overdue. Ten tournaments lost in the last couple of years, and the players have head enough. Who can blame them?

Yes,the economy is hurting, but she appeared to believe the LPGA was immune to recession, and insisted on her bull-in-a-china-shop negotiating tactics which managed to alienate almost everyone. And she was a PR disaster. It's better she gets the buy-out now, than stays in the job two more years and damages the tour any further. Now she's going, people will start praising her vision, her drive, her belief in making the LPGA a global, sporting force. But,you know, that's just the kind of crap people spout when someone is ushered out of office. The next commish might not be much better, but that's no reason to stick with what's in place. As far as I'm concerned, the sooner she's gone, the better. Oh,and welcome to the board... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

marinepaul, i believe it was you who said that mann and suggs doesn't have any interest in losing events on tour. i beg to differ, suggs was one of the great founding members of this tour. mann helped to lead it through a time of revolution and change in the 60's. i certainly think they have a vested interest, definitely suggs anyway. who would want to see what they helped found be destroyed?
