Bivens is done, just a matter of time now.

California Senate votes to bar LPGA English-only policy - ESPN

SACRAMENTO -- The California Senate has voted to make it illegal to hold events that require participants to speak English in a move prompted by the LPGA Tour's English-only proposal.

The women's golf tour wanted last year to require its players to speak English so they could talk with each other and the media and give acceptance speeches in English.

The LPGA backed off the plan after Sen. Leland Yee and others criticized it as discriminatory.

Yee says the proposal insulted women, minorities and immigrants and might disqualify the best golfers.

The San Francisco Democrat's bill makes such policies illegal in California without a "business necessity." It was approved Thursday 21-14 without debate.

The measure now heads to the Assembly.

Again Just a politician congratulating himself for making more useless PC legislation. The issue died 9 months ago, when the LPGA looked foolish.

Apparently it didn't die fast enough.

It was a stupid move by Bivens and Company, but let's be real. This legislation is just more beating a dead horse. It's just puffery by a politician to try to convince people he actually gives a damn.

As an English speaker I'd like people to be able to speak English, however failing that I see no reason why they can't just hire an interpreter for talking to the media.

1. Mandarin
Number of speakers: 1 billion+

2. English
Number of speakers: 508 million

3. Hindustani
Number of speakers: 497 million

4. Spanish
Number of speakers: 392 million

Looks like Mandarin might one day be our universal spoken language.

How did he see this as insulting to women in particular?

Anyway, at least this concludes the debate we had hear last year over whether the LPGA proposal was illegal in the first place. I argued it wasn't illegal, just stupid. I guess I was right. This proposal now does make it illegal, at least in California, by adding "language" to the existing California Civil Rights Act.

Blue,

The problem for the LPGA tour, is that unless Bivens is cut loose, the LPGA tour will be branded by this law, if passed and it will be, even though the LPGA tour's management backed off their English only policy.

I think the LPGA tour has to get rid of Bivens so the blame for this law can be directed at Bivens and her failed policies and away from the LPGA tour.

Because Carolyn Bivens was trying to impose the rule on the LPGA Members which is composed of "women" from all over the world.

I get what you mean, but this particular Bivens fiasco was only directed at a select group. That doesn't insult "women around the world," only women of the LPGA who don't happen to speak English.

Seriously, this is just another ignorant move by Bivens that's come back to bite her on the ass. But, I'm sure Wiefan and a few others will be able to see a bright side and lecture the rest of us about how wrong we are for judging the super- duper clkassy lady so harshly.
