| Brittany Lincicome Another Rising Star Makes Presence Felt By JOHN BRANCH GLADSTONE, N.J., July 9 — The newest queen of women's golf looks a lot like those who have already been preordained to carry the sport forward. Brittany Lincicome, a 20-year-old from Florida with a blond ponytail and a propensity for giggling, completed a steady march through the generations in winning the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship. She crushed the future, the 16-year-old Michelle Wie, in a quarterfinal match Saturday. She then nipped the present, the 24-year-old Lorena Ochoa — the Tour's leading money winner this year — in the semifinals Sunday morning at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. She completed the procession in the afternoon with a big-hitting, straight-shooting performance over the past, the resurgent Hall of Famer Juli Inkster, 46, who won the first of her 31 L.P.G.A. Tour titles two years before Lincicome was born. When Lincicome was finished, she held the type of trophy that has eluded some of her young contemporaries, a not-so-subtle message that she belongs in any conversation about the next generation of great golfers. "Coming through all those players and beating all of them, it means I actually did deserve to win this tournament," Lincicome said after her 3 and 2 victory over Inkster. It was the first victory of her professional career, which is in its second season. Lincicome punctuated all her postmatch comments with a giggle, a reminder of her age and lack of pretense. The golf bag that her father and caddie, Tom, carried had floppy puppets that covered the woods, including a fish and a turtle, "and a pig on the putter," she pointed out. She wore a pink shirt, a pink cap and bobby socks with Tigger pompoms in the morning, and with Winnie the Pooh pompoms in the afternoon. The pompoms "keep the socks from going down in the shoes," she explained. Inkster said, "She's got some spunk to her." It all serves as a bit of a disguise, masking Lincicome's power and mature approach. She has a game made for match play, and at 5 feet 10 inches tall, she uncoils some of the longest drives on Tour, averaging 282 yards off the tee. The wide fairways of Hamilton Farm gave her plenty of room to maneuver, and she routinely sent her drives far beyond those of Inkster, who is a solid hitter. "If somebody is outdriving you by 60 yards all day, it kind of wears on you, so I think that definitely helped me," Lincicome said. "And having wedge into every green, that's always a good thing." Exactly a week earlier, Lincicome entered the final round of the United States Women's Open tied for the lead with Wie and Annika Sorenstam. But a double bogey on the seventh hole "threw her off-kilter, and she couldn't get it back," Tom Lincicome said. She bogeyed the next hole, shot 78 and finished seventh. But in match play, the scorecard is more forgiving, and even the worst shots never cost more than a hole. "I knew I was pretty good at it," Lincicome said of the format. Every facet of Inkster's game is better than that of most other golfers, creating a complete package that makes her one of the Tour's greatest players. But after trouncing the 19-year-old Paula Creamer, 5 and 4, in the semifinals Sunday morning, Inkster could not keep pace with Lincicome. Lincicome quickly displayed her power and precision on the 533-yard par-5 second hole. She sent her second shot, using a fairway wood, through a narrow throat and onto the green's front fringe. A birdie put her 1 up. Inkster struggled enough that Lincicome won four of the next six holes by doing nothing more than making par. Inkster birdied to win the ninth hole, but Lincicome stuck her approach at the par-4 10th within a foot of the hole to push her lead back to 5 up. Lincicome was a bit shaky trying to find the knockout, however, and bogeys on Nos. 12 and 15 spared Inkster until the 16th, when both players had pars. "Thank God I was up by a lot, because I've never dealt with this pressure situation," Lincicome said. Her toughest match came against Ochoa in the semifinals. Twice she had a 2-up lead, only to lose back-to-back holes. She was down a hole for the first time after Ochoa birdied No. 16. But Ochoa, who had drained two long putts earlier, three-putted the 17th. After each parred at No. 18, they moved to No. 10. Lincicome sank a 20-footer for birdie, which she called the biggest putt of her life. Ochoa, her ball a step closer, could not match it. Ochoa beat Creamer, another pink-clad young star, in the third-place match. Inkster had beaten Creamer on the strength of five consecutive birdies on holes 6 through 10. But Inkster, who has won tournaments in 16 seasons, including this one, never seriously threatened Lincicome. She did little but serve as a worthy escort to golf's latest coronation, one dressed in pink, covered in cartoon figures and sprinkled with giggles. |

Nice article, Sag. What a way to get noticed by this young, talented lady. I think we'll be hearing more from Brittany before long. Thanks for posting this.

Who said the Match Game is meaningless? Now Brittany is being noticed and giggling all the way to the bank with $500,000...more than what most LPGA golfers make in a year! More wins Brittany and with your pretty face and pleasant personality...Nike and Sony will be chasing you like a cop going after Wiefan in a doughnut shop!

Hi ya fellas.....what is that????.....you WANT me to POST.....just kidding....actually I have a lot of personal stuff to take care of before my long trip.....I am going to Maui for about a month to babysit my granddaughter and I wanted to straighten out my stuff before I leave....anyway...enough about me....I have posted about Brittany in some of the other threads but I didn't want to BOMBARD everyone...actually here is the most curious thing I have noticed about this whole thing....ANGIE, Brittany's MOM yep!!!....I couldn't believe when I heard that the announcer said she cannot go to Brittany's tournaments because of the pressure of watching.....granted that when I first met her she was kinda on the nervous side of watching Brittany's Highs and lows....I would have imagined that she would have gotten over that and just remember more about the Highs instead of the Lows....let me tell you a little about Angie.....just like any parent she really pulls hard for her daughter to make putts....I earlier gave Angie a shell Lei and she said it was her good luck charm for Brittany to do well.....anyway....she started to squeeze the shell lei so so tight everytime Brittany had a putt to save par.....I think she "popped" a few shells doing this....just a typical mom if you ask me.....she has the fortitude to watch the highs and lows of her daughter's experience.....I hope she goes out to Brittany's other tournament anyway....here is what I like most about Tom and Angie....this was at Brittany's first Professional event at the SBS....Angie was telling me about how exciting Brittany was at eating with the other players at the Player's eating area.....so I asked her "How did you and Tom like it?"....she said Her and Tom ate at McDonalds....NOW.....how much more down to earth can you get.....terriffic people.....Angie was so so happy that Brittany made her first cut at that event.....Angie's response was that "this at least covers the expenses of the trip to Hawaii"....because of this I am more than happy for Brittany making a bundle at the Match play....it couldn't happen to a more deserving family now about Brittany's golf game....I am leery about boasting and praising too much....this week she was absolutely terriffic but I have reservations about her short game.....her putting "NORMALLY" is not the best, nor is it the worst....it is pretty much I guess average when you compare her to others....it is her chipping and shots out of the rough that makes me nervous....it seems like she just doesn't have enough lessons of different ways and circumstances.....I get nervous about this because Brittany is very long off the tee and if it lands in the rough....this sometimes negates her distance....Brittany herself said that on Saturday, she missed only one fairway.....with this stat, Brittany will kill everyone because of her distance factored in....but not in every tournament will she be hitting a lot of fairways...and when she doesn't I think it will be a very frustrated day for her.....this is one of the reasons that I was a little hesitant about "blabbering too much about her"....like Angie , I was a little worried about the down side......hopefully Brittany gets better at her short game or at least more consistent....then I think she will be a major force with Paula, Morgan,Lang and MW....when I look at tournaments and see Brittany up on the leader board, I am thoroughly surprised, when I see any of the other four, I sort of expected it.....you see it is like this.....these other four somehow can control the big numbers somehow.....it is expected that you will encounter a big number every once in awhile...with Brittany, hers seem to come more often....and usually it spoils a terriffic round that she had going....Blondog can attest to this....so can Angie....that 18th hole at the SBS was a Heartbreaker for the Lincicomes...and it wasn't just for one day....everyone was making Birdies and pars and all Angie and I were hoping for was Bogey and not anything higher anyway.....Brittany is a terriffic kid...strong too....when she gave me a hug I thought my bones were being crushed anyway....I gotta go back to getting my stuff ready for this babysitting trip....should be fun...I won't be posting too much probably....when my grandkids take a nap....I probably will be also!!!....ahhh what a life anyway.....see ya everybody....have a good day |

Wiefan, I'm looking forward to the days I get to babysit. After September, I should get my chance. Brittany's game isn't much different than some of the other young players. The short game seems to plague several of these young stars.

Michelle got up and down from the green-side rough by making a 12 foot putt and Brittany chipped about 8 feet past the hole and lipped out her birdie putt. Now of course it is possible that Brittany was trying to chip in for eagle and just got a little greedy.

Hi ya sag....I like your avatar.....maybe you should make copies for Blue and Marinepaul.....ahhhh that would be fun Hi ya gxer....Peter Osterhaust commented on the same thing about Brittany's chipping....he said she looks uncomfortable....but the big thing is that Brittany is very very comfortable smacking the heck out of the ball with her driver....I think chipping involves a lot of dedicated practice, but also you need coaching on different types of scenerios....this is a part of the game that Annika and Wiesy has really improved on....I guess it is all in trusting what you are about to hit....hopefully Brittany develops the touch....she reminds me of John Daly....but what people overlook is that Big John Daly has very very good soft hands around the green....he is awfully good....anyway when Brittany had that sweeping draw...the ball would really be way way out there on Dogleg left holes......I mean really be out there....but on dogleg right holes...Angie and I had to hold our breaths as Brittany went over the trouble areas to draw her ball back to the fairways....I am glad that she straightened out her shot.....lost a little roll distance but easier for her to control...I think if Brittany puts a POWER fade into her bag and is comfortable with using it....it will be a DYNAMITE club for her anyway....I wonder if I will have "withdrawls" when I am in Maui....probably not....I have already taught my granddaughter to recognize Michelle's face on TV....so she sits with me during tournaments....God my Granddaughter is SMART....she already loves Wiesy.....I wonder why anyway....all of you have a good week....see ya |

Wiefan, thanks for the offer, but if I decide I need an avatar, I have one in mind. It's going to be inetersting if Brittany ever does develop a good short game. She looks like she can be one of the upper echelon players once she gets some consistency with her wedges and putter.
