New Categories - member feedback wanted

In an effort to attract a broader audience to myLPGA.com and to make the site more appealing for people that just want to talk and enjoy golf in general. I'm thinking about adding the following forum categories to the site. I'd appreciate member feedback on this and any suggestions or
idea's you might have to improve the site, get the site more active, and attract new membership.

Categories I've been thinking of adding:

Golf Discussion General
Golf Courses
Golf Equipment
Golf Swing
Golf Reviews
PGA

I'm keeping in mind that the main purpose of this site is for the LPGA
and members might want to keep it exclusively that way. So please give me some feedback on what you think.

Hi Rusty -- It's a great idea to try to expand the site, though keeping in mind that the site's byline is "The LPGA Tour Discussion Forum". People who just want to talk about golf and don't care about the LPGA have plenty of other places to go on the net to discuss golf. You might also want to add just a few categories to start and see how they're used. If they get over-populated or cluttered with confusing topics, then you can divide them up logically according to how the discussions fall. So maybe to start:
- PGA Tour and Other Men's Tours
- Golf Courses and Travel
- Playing Golf

Smile A positive vote

I agree with Blue, basically, but where she has "PGA Tour and other Men's Tours", I might make this change: "LET, PGA and other tours."

This coming season will have quite a bit of television "down-time" for the LPGA while they play out of the country in July and August. I know I will be watching the men during this time. For the past several years I have kept up on the LET, also.

I like the idea of expanding, Rusty.

Hi Rusty,

I don't see what you have to lose by adding more categories. You could just delete the ones that don't get activity. Maybe do that with some player folders too.

You might also want to consider adding College Golf as a category. I don't follow it, but, much to my suprise, the Golfweek message boards are predominantly college golf fans. Even the LPGA folder over there is kinda slanted toward the college golf fans' take on LPGA issues.

Anyways, just a suggestion. I told you I'd be having a lot of them for you. :)

Hi Rusty,

I have another suggestion ... Ignore my previous suggestion. :)

To be honest, the motivation in encouraging changes was only my personal desire to see the insular, clubby core group of members (Buzzer's group of six) broken up and replaced with new posters.

If I approach it objecively, I pretty much agree with Xman's post in the other thread.

The site is, after all, myLPGA, and a lot of the members seem to have an "us vs. them" attitude about the PGA. I think that there are in fact plenty of LPGA fans to allow growth on the site without expanding the scope.

Your challenge, IMO, is to get more of the readers (aka lurkers) to participate. You have already experienced how new, or infrequent, posters are treated. Imagine your "welcome" if you weren't the owner. The core members seem to be distrusting, even paranoid, if a new poster challenges their opinions.

I could be way off, but my impression is that this site has become a place for people to send each other private messages more than post things for public discussion.

Buzzers group may not always agree with you rainman but we dislike none.
Talk about distrusting and paranoid. Geees.
I have totally been slaughtered from time to time by what you call core group.
I take it like a man and don't cry.
You are trying the ol (friends romans and country men) routine on the new owner.
I think Rusty is smarter then that,
And now... there is no Buzzers group thats a crock.
Look man, you get on a forum knowing people are not always gonna agree with you.

Rainman.....I must disagree with your post concerning the core posters not welcoming new posters to this site. I have always welcomed new posters as have Marine Paul, Blue, Wiefan, Xman, NTB and others.

As for private messages I have sent three in the past month. One of them answered a question not related to the LPGA or golf in anyway. Two or three others related to meeting at tournaments with several of the others posters who were going to be there.

In the past five or six months I have received about six PM's regarding non-golf matters.

Many months ago, when I was a moderator on this site, we had a problem with pornos and spam that I had a devil of a time keeping up with. I made it a point to be up by 6:30 am daily to check the morning "reports". Some of them got through and I received many PM's about them. Since I am in the EST zone I was able to cleanse the screen before the later time zones woke up. I notified Admin in Hawaii and I know that he worked long, hard hours to come up with a filter to keep these types things away from us. And, of course we communicated by PM.

The only reason I am writing this, Rainman, is that I believe that somewhere along the line you have gotten a wrong perception of the posters on this board. That bothers me just a little because in the three or so years I have been here I have found everybody to be pretty nice people.....and I am very fortunate to have met more than a few of our fellow posters at tournaments. They have proven to be really nice, fun-loving and extremely golf oriented. Someday, I'd like to meet you at a tournament....we'd probably hit it off pretty well. Thanx for "listening".

Viva Annika

Part of what has made this site enjoyable is that we don't always agree. Whether it's politics, Wie, or whatever, we have varied opinions. Sometimes the discussions have gotten heated, but more often than not, people I disagree with on one subject, I agree with on another.

As far as welcoming new posters, I've always made it a point to try to welcome newcomers. I know that Buzzer, NTB, Blue, Wiefan and others have done the same thing.

It's a discussion site. We don't necessarily hold hands and sing "Kumbaya," but for the most part, we get along pretty well. The posters I've had the opportunity to meet, much like Buzzer's experience, have all been great. Whatever put a bee in your butt, I can say pretty safely that it probably wasn't personal.
