OK wiefan.... here's a good one for you. It happened to me.

My ball was in a greenside bunker, and as I walked in to play the shot, I noticed I had a large magnolia leaf attached to my golf spikes. (I had 'walked' the leaf into the bunker).

Under Rule 13-4, a golfer may not ... "Touch or move a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard."

Hmmmm...what to do? I knew if I dug my feet in to take my stance, I would be moving the loose impediment that was stuck to my spikes, and possibly improving the area of my stance.

What do you think?

I'm not Wiefan, so excuse me for butting in, but I'd guess ... automatic DQ? Plus a required donation to the National Save the Magnolia Foundation.

No, Blue....You're not wiefan. I know wiefan. Wiefan is a friend of mine. Blue...you're no wiefan.

A donation to the NSMF wasn't necessary because the leaf was already dead. However, I could have contributed to the upkeep of their Memorial Compost Pile.

OK....a bit more that I should have mentioned as to what happened.

I did not dig in with the foot that had the leaf attached to the spikes. I dug in w/ the other one and hit the shot. Then removed the leaf.

The question is...was I entitled to remove the leaf or must I have left it in place per Rule 13-4?

It did not improve the lie of the ball or improve your stance or improve anything so you have no problem.

Cool

If you walked it in, then walk it out, remove it and walk back in and do your thing.

Uh huh.... good replies. What about this Decision and how it might relate to the situation of my accidentally walking a magnolia leaf into the bunker? Could I then remove it?
Dec. 13-4/14 Player Accidentally Kicks Pine Cone into Bunker and Picks It Up

Q. A player’s ball went into a bunker. The player accidentally kicked a pine cone, and it rolled into the bunker. He picked up the pine cone which was not interfering with his stance or the area of his intended swing. Did he incur a penalty?

A. Yes. A pine cone is a loose impediment — see Definition of “Loose Impediments” — and may not be removed when both the impediment and the ball lie in a hazard (Rule 13-4c). By removing the pine cone from the bunker, the player incurred a penalty of loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play for a breach of Rule 13-4c.
