I read about Leadbetter talking about Wie's changing shafts in her driver (no double entendres please) but he didn't say why a less stiff shaft would improve accuracy.

My impression had always been that a stiffer shaft would improve accuracy but less stiff would add distance if the timing was right (more whiplike rebound effect).
Shaft flex is a very interesting subject, especially in drivers. The real question is this. Does the shaft flex match your swing and overall physical golfing strength? If the shaft is too stiff for your physical golfing strength you will have a tendency to swing too hard and too fast, trying to get the shaft to flex, so that your distance isn't killed.

Welcome back, gxer...I thought you'd croaked or something.

Anyhow, I agree with you about Wie's shaft flex. Is it correct that it wasn't just a Stiff shaft, but an X-Stiff? Anyhow, I never felt she should have been playing w/ the X-stiff shaft which I believe has hurt her swing in that she can't get it squared and leaves it out right, or sometimes swings too quickly trying to square it and hits some goof shot left. I agree that her accuracy might be improved with a less stiff shaft. I hope so.

Lojo,

Yes, Wiesy uses an extra-stiff shaft and Leadbetter is trying to get her to use a less stiff shaft.
---------------------
Equipment may have also been part of the problem, Leadbetter said.

“She’s just messing around, trying to find the right shaft (in her driver),” he said. “There’s an (extra-stiff) shaft in there, which isn’t very forgiving. ... I think that shaft may be a little stiff for her.

“You know, she’s always sort of played (extra-stiff) shafts, probably a throwback to the days when she thought, ‘That’s what the PGA Tour players play, so I’ve got to play it.’ ... When her rhythm’s good, it’s fine, but you’ve got to find something a little more forgiving.”
