So, most of them never learned or may learn just a few words to get by.
Regarding citizenship...some countries in the Far East acquire their citizenships by blood meaning if their father is a citizen of a Far Eastern country(even the mother is a U.S. or other country's citizen), regardless of where they are born...they are still considered citizen of that country. While here in the U.S. you acquire your natural citizenship by place of birth meaning if you are born here in the U.S. regardless of what your parents' citizenships, you are automatically an American citizen. That's why mssionaries in the Philippines for example whose children are born in the Philippines don't have any citizenship...while children of Filipinos who are green card holders have dual citizenships until they turned 18 years old in which they can choose their citizenships. I think that's what happened to Christina Kim...and she chose American citizenship.

Now here is one reason why she became so unpopular in korea. In a intervie with a US magazine, she listed Apolo anton ohno as her celeb crush and ohno was koreans' public enemy no 1 at that time. |

You're right. That's why I said, if they were just "green card" holders...in which case, they were not American citizen yet. But if her parents were already naturalized American citizen when she was born here in the U.S., she's no longer considered Korean citizen even before she reached 18 years old.

Hmm, sorry my blog post came across as disorganized . . . it seems a pretty typical format for blogs. Anyway, regarding dual citizenship, Korea does not allow dual citizenship so would have had to choose at age 21. The wikipedia entry lays it out pretty simply: South Korean nationality law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia DYNAMIC-KOREA The wikipedia article also brings up an interesting point off-topic to this conversation: Korean men who have dual citizenship (and thus are younger than 21) are subject to Korea's compulsory military service. To avoid this is one reason men sometimes choose the American citizenship over the Korean one (although this, too, is interpreted as traitorous [sp?]) |

With all this discussion of nationality and race and so forth, which is certainly welcome if done with care, one aspect of this story I've yet to see explored is the fact that an LPGA golfer is suing for libel and defamation a newspaper that is part of the same media group as the cable TV network that just secured the Korean TV rights to the LPGA. As if Ms Bivens needed ANOTHER headache to deal with... Kevin
