Hip surgery

Our Grace has again been forced to the sidelines in an effort to improve her overall health. I'm sure I speak for all when I wish for her to come back fully recovered and in prime shape to compete.

Grace Park to miss four months

Seoul, South Korea (Sports Network) - Grace Park underwent successful arthroscopic hip surgery this week and will miss up to four months of action on the LPGA Tour.

"It was a very difficult decision to have the surgery and miss time, but this was the only way to get back to being healthy and strong," Park said in a statement. "Doctors have given me a very positive prognosis for recovery and I hope to be back playing by the end of August if all goes according to plan."

Park has experienced problems with her lower back and hip through much of the last two seasons.

Park has six career victories on the LPGA Tour, but none since the 2004 CJ Nine Bridges Classic Presented by Sports Today. Earlier that year, she won her only major title at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

In 2009, Park played four events, but withdrew from the J Golf Phoenix LPGA International. She missed the cut at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Park tied for 32nd at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay and shared 12th at the MasterCard Classic.

Four months right now means Portland, one of only 6 full-field events left on the schedule from that point onward. Unless she opts for a medical exemption she'll have to enter all of them to fufill the 10-event minimum to maintain full membership on the Tour for next season.

Dottie's pulling for Grace too...

...as evidenced from this Golf.com column:

Dottie Pepper: Pulling for Grace Park comeback

There are times when life gives us a speed bump, but slowing down for that moment allows us to jump into the fast lane once we get going again. I believe that's what's going to happen for Grace Park, who last week announced she had undergone successful arthroscopic surgery for a torn labrum in her hip. Grace has battled neck and back issues since her college days at Arizona State, where she dominated for two years before moving on to the LPGA in 2000.

A six-time winner, she began to suffer burnout in 2004, not long after she won that year's Kraft Nabisco. She started spending more time in South Korea — seemingly trying to find out who she really was after being sent as a child to live with a nanny in the U.S. so she could develop her golf skills. Her recovery is expected to take four months, and I encourage Grace not to push it. After August there simply aren't that many events remaining on the schedule. She should come back when the healing is complete, both physically and emotionally, when her heart wants it. I made the mistake of returning too soon after my first shoulder surgery in '02. I set a calendar date that my mind and body weren't even close to being on the same page with and ultimately paid the price with more extensive rehab and a major blow to my motivation and confidence. The LPGA needs the personality, wit, beauty and talent of Grace Park. I hope she uses this surgery as a means to restart her promising career.

With the loss of Kapalua, make that FIVE regular full field events left on the schedule in a span of six weeks. Unless she does well enough to qualify for the Asian swing she won't be in the minimum 10 events this season, so it's looking more likely from this observer that she'll take a medical exemption to retain her status and position on the Priority List for 2010. Coming back for these five events if she's not fully recovered by late August would be very risky indeed. I dearly want Grace to be back competing, but I want her healthy and competitive even more, however long that takes.

What an unfortunate situation! I have been a fan of Grace for years and really miss her. Anyone who hears any news from her, please keep us informed.
