Inkster to return in 2017 as captain

Juli Inkster was offered and accepted the captaincy of the 2017 US Solheim Team.

Matches are Aug. 18-20, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Actually I like to see someone else even though Julie gave us the win. I still think that there are a bunch of good US players from the 80's/90's that have not done it yet.

Agreed.
But, I've got to think that others were considered for this task.
In a way, a complicated decision, in another way, not so complicated.

I'd like to see the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup move away from using retired players as captains and move to using actual trained coaches, like college team coaches. They have valuable skills that even the most successful and experienced former player does not have.

These guys don't need coaches. No one is going to tell them how to play. Nor would they respect them. The position is Captain not Coach. Very different.

The title is captain. The position, for all intents and purposes, is coach (or to use the baseball term, manager). That's the problem.

The captains are asked to do a lot of things that a college coach does: build team unity, decide who plays and when, develop competition strategy, etc. A professional team coach is better suited for this than a retired player IMHO.

Only 6 of the top 20 players in the Rolex Rankings would compete in Solheim Cup if it were held today.

That's about how it's been going.

In both 2013 and 2015, it looks like 7 of the top 20 competed.

So what!

fetucinialfokcu 12-26-2015 04:41 PM

I just don't see what the big deal about this event is. I didn't start following the LPGA until 2006 and everything about this event seems less than Ryder Cup, less than President's Cup and even less than the Olympics. The International Crown makes more sense. Imagine an event putting Inbee Park, Lydia Ko, Stacy Lewis and Shanshan Feng against each other? With IC that could happen, not so with Solheim Cup.

Everyone is free to like the events they do but Solheim doesn't do it for me.
