Wie Time Bomb

Here is the link to a column by a golf writer of the Sunday Herald in Scotland. It is a good read about why the Eurorean Tour would allow a woman (young woman) to play in one of its tournaments:

Thanks for the link Boola, interesting read, but you've got to figure a guy with a name like "Alasdiar Ried Alasdair Reid" would be a bit pompous.

Boola,

Thanks for that article. Here are the parts of that article that I think cut to the chase.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
If women’s golf loses its star names to the men’s game on a regular basis then its wider commercial value nosedives. And what of golf’s version of the West Lothian question? If women can compete in men’s events then surely men can compete in women’s tourn aments. Those who blabber on self-righteously about equality whenever this issue arises might like to remember that equality works both ways.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of portentous twaddle has been spoken about Wie breaking down barriers in golf. In actual fact, her participation in men’s events is driven entirely by commercial factors and by the agents and the mister fix-its who all take their slice of her multi-million dollar earnings. The European Tour have missed a chance to stand up for the integrity of their sport. If only they had Ivor’s inner steel.

It looks like everyone read it the same way I did.......PW....You are right.....he IS a pompous ass.....I didn't like his attitude........But then when he said if Michelle Wie can play in men's events, THEN men should be able to play in LPGA events.......That would be like major league ballplayers playing in girls softball games.....

Regarding Michelle Wie participating in "men's events", there actually is no such thing as men's events. The tour that most professional men play on is the PGA as in Professional Golfer's Association, not MPGA as in Men's Professional Golfer's Association. Michelle Wie is a professional golfer, so the PGA belongs to her as much as it belongs to any man, no matter what the men may think.

If the men are better than her, she is no threat to them, period. The only reason for men to resent Michelle Wie participating in "men's events" is if the men are afraid she may one day beat them. And that would ruffle their macho peacock feathers.

If you want to assert your superiority over Michelle, beat her. But be prepared for the day when she beats you, because it may not be that far away.

By the way, I am a man and Michelle Wie is better than I could ever hope to be. And that's okay. If my pride is damaged because I get beat, whether by a man or a woman, who on that day is better than me, my pride was not worth much anyway.

VERY good post, Virginian........you hit the nail right on the head......I echo every word you said.....you wrote...."If you want to assert your superiority over Michelle, beat her. But be prepared for the day when she beats you, because it may not be that far away."......You are RIGHT there.......It could happen in her next full men's tournament, the John Deere Classic, where I feel she will play that 6th hole, that cost her the cut last year.....just PERFECT this time....and finally ,make a PGA tour CUT!!!.....OH, I almost forgot.....WELCOME to our site......it looks like you will be a very good poster.........SO, keep posting!.....
