This is totally stupid, in my opinion. What's the point?

That she's 61? OK, fine. Big deal.

So, she'll be the first person to swim the Florida Straits without a shark cage? Let's hope her "shark spotters" do a good job. BFD.

I think it's kind of cool that anyone, regardless of age, is doing this.

I agree. BFD.

Since the early fifties, thousands of Cubans have done it the other way. From Cuba to Florida.
Those who made it are happily and quietly living in the USA. The other ones, you have to ask the sharks.

You got that right, Elf!! Having lived in Miami for nearly 30 yrs myself....crossing the Florida Straits from Cuba was reported daily in the Miami Herald! Though, most of them floated over on innner tubes or on rickety "boats."

And the ones that didn't make it....RIP.

First of all, this is from Cuba to Florida.

Anyway, this is different. It's just a person against the water done as a sport. Not people in a boat or raft done to save their lives.

It's different, obviously.

You guys are so cynical. Where is your sense of adventure? If she were swimming someplace politically benign like the Hudson River from Albany to NYC would it make a difference?

Don't think there would be a need for shark spotters in the Hudson River, eh?

It's nothing to do with "politically" this or that...vis a vis Cuba. It's just dumb....IMO.

The Cubans that made it swimming did not advertise their odyssey. They would have ended in jail or deported. You only know of those that were caught by USA Agencies dead or alive in rafts or other devices.
With a good current and top notch swim wear I could make it from Albany to NYC. Not the other way. It could take days to swim a mile. Besides I would have to take all kinds of antibiotics and other not so "benign" medicines.

Oh sure, it's stupid and a "BFD" event, but hey, she wants to do it and more power to her - it means nothing to us, but probably means a lot to her. I just hope she doesn't lose any limbs doing it.
