BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) & Sony Ericsson Open (Miami)

2010 Sony Ericsson Open Champion, Kim Clijsters

This is probably one of the most exciting times for American tennis fans, and tennis fans in general. Two of the biggest tournaments outside of the Slams, Indian Wells (BNP Paribas) and Miami (Sony Ericsson Open) run back to back. In fact, a lot of people would say they are THE two biggest tournaments outside of the Slams (tour championship people might disagree).

Miami Promo

For me, 2010 was terrific as my favorite two women's players, Kim Clijsters (also currently my favorite athlete in any sport) and Jelena Jankovic, took both crowns. Those two are having good years but it's sports. I don't expect the stars will align again for my favorites (although at the Australian Open Kimmie and my favorite men's player, Novak Djokovic, both won).

Indian Wells Promo

Outside of the Grand Slams, these two events are the only tour stops that extend beyond 8 days. Indian Wells is up first, starting today and stretching into Sunday a week and a half away. Both events are mixed, having men's and women's draws.

Coco Vandeweghe

All seeded players get a first round bye so no Clijsters, Wozniacki, Stosur, etc on the first two days...but a number of Americans played well on day one including wins by Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Melanie Oudin and Coco Vandeweghe. Tough loss for Vania King.

Kim Clijsters in a terrific Q&A at Indian Wells. That was a really quick “no” about Jada being a tennis player! Wow, she wants to adopt. Plus, she’s talked about having another child. She really has the mother gene, no doubt about it! Go Kimmie!

Ana Ivanovic

The seeded players were not in action in round 1 as they were all advanced into round 2 with automatic byes. Well, the unseeded players who had success in round 1 found it time to wave bye-bye in round 2 as Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic, Vera Zvonareva, Jelena Jankovic and others showed why they are the top players. I cover it here:

...yet another promo for Indian Wells...I like this one, too...of course, the part with Kim twirling her daughter in her arms is my favorite part, but Ana Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska and Dinara Safina make appearances also, among others...

I am not suggesting at all that I expect top seeded Caroline Wozniacki or 4th-seeded Samantha Stosur to lose their third round matches. But after Caroline defeated Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-2 in the second round, she now goes on to face Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. No big deal, right? A 2 and 1 victory for Caroline, you say? Well, yes I probably agree. Except that Caroline and Maria have played 3 times before, and Maria has won every match. Sometimes, there is just one middle tier player that for whatever reasons gives a top player problems. Granted, two of those matches were on clay and the one on hardcourt was the match Caroline gave Maria problems, going to three sets. But Maria won that final set 6-0 in Beijing in 2009. Maria handled Caroline 4 and 2 in Rome last year. So we are not talking about results from 3 or 4 years ago. But Caroline wasn’t #1 then. I expect the Danish superstar to stop Maria’s streak.

It’s kind of hard to believe Andy hasn’t won at Indian Wells, as great as his game is on hardcourts.

John Isner, Melanie Oudin, Sam Querrey

In this year that marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the BNP Paribas Open At Indian Wells is the official California sponsor of the 9/11 Flag. Interesting that it was originally stitched back together by tornado survivors in Greenburg, Kansas. We all stand as one, hopefully, despite our different ideas and political inclinations.

Defending Champion Jelena Jankovic

A nice collection of WTA superstars talking about what they like about Indian Wells at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. Unfortunately, Li Na has already been ousted. She really has fallen off since the Australian Open. I know she says she was distracted by Chinese New Year celebrations plus you have to think all the new sponsorships and public appearances didn’t help. But still, she should beat Peng Shuai any day. Well, I guess not.

Novak Djokovic with Randy Jackson and Will Ferrell

So will Novak Djokovic keep rolling at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells? He has already made quite a statement this year that he’s a threat to be #1. If he manages to win here, with Rafa and Roger in the field, especially if he beats either of them…the sky is the limit.
