2011 FIFA Women's World Cup
Hope Solo

Ok, as it was difficult for me to follow the Wegmans this weekend with all the Wimbledon action and catching up on watching some of the matches I didn't write about, it is going to be tough for me to keep up with this until Wimbledon is over. That said, I am pulling for the U.S. (no surprise) and am a big fan of goalkeeper Hope Solo. So I'll start off with some Hope...

The U.S. Squad heads Group C. The three other sides are North Korea, Colombia and Sweden. I generally don't root against any country with personal enmity involved...but our first match is against North Korea. I am hoping for a U.S. beatdown of the North Korean squad. OK...ok...I need to take a deep breath...the players are just players...not the idiots running the N.K. and starving their own people. Just win, U.S.A.!

Other Groups are:

Group A (Germany, France, Canada, Nigeria)
Group B (Japan, New Zealand, Mexico, England)
Group D (Brazil, Australia, Norway, Equatorial Guinea)

I am 100% pulling for the U.S., but if it can't be us then I am rooting for Canada...our neighbors to the north. If not them or us, a real possibility, then for some reason I would root for Norway...just because I'd love to see see Suzann Pettersen's reaction if the Norweigans won...if she had chosen to pursue a different sport, who knows...maybe she would have been on the Norweigan team!

I know Hope Solo created a lot of controversy at the last Women's World Cup. She should not have said what she did in the press. You keep those comments in the locker room and you direct your comments to Greg. However, I also thought it was wrong for the team to ban her from even attending the medal ceremony to pick up her bronze. Without her, they might not have won a bronze. She should never have been pulled, especially as well as she was playing. She proved at the Olympics, where she led the U.S. to the gold, what her worth was to the team. Unfortunately, she is coming back from a shoulder injury that at one time might have ended a career. As it stands, it is questionable whether she is still the player she was in 2007. That was probably her best chance at gold. She was healthy and one of the most fear goaltenders in women's soccer and the team was better.

A few more player profiles...after all...there's a lot more to this team than just Hope Solo...

Good start by Team USA, beating North Korea 2-0. But the DPRK coach blaming his team's loss on lightning strikes? It's good to know the leaders of their sports teams are as full of...as their "dear leader"...

Rachel Buehler
