Hope Solo in World Cup training session

There is no doubt which player has emerged a superstar for the US Women’s National Team. She’s one of the best, if not the best, goaltenders in the world. She’s smart and opinionated. She’s a looker, to add. But will she and her teammates end the 2011 Women’s World Cup as champions? I certainly hope so.

Pssst...ok, I have a secret to tell all of you...nobody knows this...Hope Solo is my favorite soccer player...let's try to keep this under wraps...

...sorry, whomever loaded this has the audio out of sync...but I'm just happy he or she loaded it...I could have done my own upload, but I'm too busy working on something else...you'll see it posted here (in a So Yeon Ryu themed thread) by Saturday night...

22-year old Cal-Berkeley alum, Alex Morgan, is the youngest player on the 2011 Women’s National Team. She scored her first Women’s World Cup goal in the semifinals against France, helping Team USA complete a 3-1 victory. She is a forward for the Western New York Flash of the WPS. She also was a member of the U-20 (under 20) Women’s National Team that won the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. She was awarded the Silver Ball as the tournament's second best player as well as the Bronze Shoe as the third leading goal scorer.

Hope Solo In World Cup Training Session

It hasn’t been the smoothest road to the 2011 Women’s World Cup final, but nonetheless the USA Soccer Women’s National Team now stands poised to finish what they started. Abby Wambach has shown millions who didn’t know who she was three weeks ago why this team, when pushed to the brink, looks to her for miracles. She delivers salvation. Hope Solo, shunned four years ago, has since the last World Cup redeemed herself with an Olympic Gold Medal and now a place in the World Cup final. Alex Morgan appears to be the star of the future. But in the present, Abby, Hope, Alex and all of Team USA has an inspired team from Japan standing in their way. Nadeshiko Japan plays for more than just athletic glory. They play to lift an entire nation from tragedy. It’s difficult not to be moved by the mission of Team Japan. But there is no honor in rolling over so that a sentimental story can be told. If Japan is to win, they must earn it. The American team should go out and give no quarter. There is no sympathy on the pitch. However, more than than that, Team USA must cut down their mistakes. They have in some ways survived some shaky play at times to arrive in the final. They are the favorites, as well they should be. Now it is time to put all the hard work, training and talent together on the ultimate stage of women’s soccer.

Hope Solo

Abby Wambach

Poor France.Technique-wise,they were the best team in the tournament, but lacked a killer instinct in front of goal.

Still, nice to see cute-black-girl-with-dreadlocks score a great goal against Sweden...

Ali Krieger against Japan in May 2011

Ali Krieger was a two-time All-American at Penn State, where she was part of four Big Ten Championship teams. She is a member of 1. FCC Frankfurt, but has played on loan to the Washington Freedom. She also scored the winning penalty kick during the shootout against Brazil for the United States Women’s National Team at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Ali against China in October 2010

Ali suffered a serious health episode in 2005. While suffering from shortness of breath, her boyfriend convinced her to go to the hospital. She was found to have blood clots in her lungs. Ali had six mini-heart attacks due restriction of blood flow.

All the talk is done. The time is here for the United States Women’s National Team to play the game of their lives. Abby. Hope. Ali. Coach Pia. All of Team USA. There is one game left to play. This is their time to write a happy ending to their story. Destiny awaits.

Here we go again...another nail-biting finish...great goal by Alex Morgan...wasted by a terrible job of clearing by the US defense...

Congratulations to Japan! Lots of chances for the USA. They didn't capitalize early. They didn't close it out late. Awful shootout by the American side. A great win for Japan. More to come later.
