2011 AFL (Aussie rules football) season

President Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard handballing an Aussie football back and forth in the Oval Office at the White House Monday 7 March 2011.

I wasn't going to write this until after I got back from Phoenix because the new season doesn't begin until the 24th, but this picture was too good to pass up.

As Collingwood prepares to begin defense of their 2010 premiership they face a slightly different AFL in 2011. For starters, there will be an expansion team joining the competition for the first time since 1995, although they will be trodding ground that hosted AFL football before. The Gold Coast Suns will play at a rebuilt Cararra Stadium that was home to the Brisbane Bears between 1987-1992 prior to their 1996 merger with the Fitzroy Lions and adopting the latter's colors and nickname. As there will be an odd number of teams at least one side will have a bye in each of the 24 rounds of the season for a 22 game schedule, a dilemma that will disappear with the arrival of the Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2012. The Grand Final, normally on the last Saturday in September, will be contested this year on the 1st of October.

Yawn. Thanks for the reminder to avoid ESPN here on a Sunday for the next several month.

Aerial bloody ping pong.
