LPGA's Ochoa is a great player, and an even better person

LPGA's Ochoa is a great player, and an even better person

John Korobanik
CanWest News Service; Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

EDMONTON - Lorena Ochoa stood chatting with her caddie on the driving range, virtually ignored by television cameras all focused on Michelle Wie hitting balls two spots over.

When the 17-year-old Wie departed, so did the cameras.

There's no doubt Wie is a huge story in women's golf whenever she shows up on the LPGA Tour, for which she is still too young to play full time.

But Ochoa is the No. 1-ranked female golfer in the world, the leading money winner on the Tour this year, and coming off her first major victory at the British Open.

Not exactly someone to be ignored.

If it bothers her at all, the 25-year-old Mexican hero doesn't show it.

"It's fair sometimes that other players get more attention," she said after her practice round Tuesday at Edmonton's Royal Mayfair Golf Club, site of this week's CN Canadian Women's Open. "They are from the United States or they are from Canada this week. I understand that.

"When I go to Mexico, I get the attention. It's natural. And I like to stay a little behind, it's easier for me."

The LPGA couldn't have a better ambassador. She's the best player on their Tour and with a friendly, charismatic personality that the crowds love.

Nothing left to prove with Lorena. She walks the walk. The Wie story is interesting because people are still being sucked in thinking this girl is going to be great.

A smart and wise foundation, and young lady. Maybe one day all mankind well get the fundamental education they need.... which well happen, if people thinking like Lorena keep getting involved. Thanks for the video BKB. :-)
