Solheim Cup Update: Players Fighting For Remaining Spots

With the Solheim Cup just about 2 months away, I think it's a good time to look at what players are a lock to be playing, and which players are fighting for spots.

Looks like a shootout for #8. The way it seems is that Wie, Kang and Salas will be fighting for the 2 extra picks by Inkster. I think she will favor experience with Wie and Salas.

Of course I already said there should be strong consideration for Nelly Korda, rankings be damned.

As it is shaping up I like the US top 5 over the Euro top 5.

But still a little premature.

Wie is more consistent than Ernst, I wouldn't be surprised if she catches up

With her win at the KMPG PGA today. Danielle Kang takes over the 6th spot in the Solheim Cup standings, bumping Austin Ernst out.

A long way to go - two more majors before the cutoff.

Only Marina Alex, Lizette Salas, and Cristie Kerr earned "major" Solheim points at the US Women's Open. Alex moved ahead of Mo Martin into 13th place on points. Salas moved two places, into 10th place ahead of Lincicome and Stanford. From the last Solheim team, it looks like Pressel, Creamer, Alison Lee, and Angela Stanford will need a Juli pick (Juli only gets 2 picks) in order to compete in Iowa. Lincicome and Lang could be short on points, too. Frankly, both Stanford and Lang have played so poorly in 2017 that I don't think they would be good for the team.

In a later post, I will recommend who I think should be the captain's picks and why.

Not that I wish ill on any of these players who are on the cusp I really don't but I think Juli shouldn't even pick them for supporting roles for the team if they're not captain's picks. I would hope/think that missing out on the Solheim experience completely might motivate them to play better. Perhaps I'm just jaded with Paula and Morgan and the ribbons, fingernails, and facepainting but it kind of seems like it was more about the "atmosphere" for them than the playing was secondary. Although those 2 in particular have good solheim moments/records. If Juli names them assistant captains or a supporting role, I think it sends the message that if you don't qualify you can still come to the party. Players who have been on the cusp have not been offered roles before so I don't see the need t start that trend and to me, it kind of also sends a message of ok, you're past your prime, let's start training you to be a captain. Just a thought, really no ill will meant. Obviously, Juli has the last word, she might find their presence beneficial for the rookies.
