Should Alexis Thompson be Turning Pro

Alexis Thompson has announced her plans to turn pro in June at the age of 15 years and 4 months.

Should she be doing this?

I voted no. She's way too young. Kids turning pro at that age rarely turns out well.

A young girl being thrust into the national spotlight before she's emotionally mature.

What could possibly go wrong ?...

I was undecided.

I think the LPGA won't let you be a member until you are older, so she would have to go the Michelle Wei route of exemptions. So she might not go to a full time schedule and have time for high school. Yet able to keep the money and pay for coaches and training now that she will need to compete full time in the future.

I had not even considered this, so it is even easier to become a pro.

Does anyone remember the rules about age to be an LPGA member? LET member? Could she join other world wide tours full time?

LPGA: 18. Age 15-17 can petition for a waiver.

Futures Tour: 17? Can apply for a waiver at 16 possibly.

LET: Same as LPGA.

KLPGA: 12?

JLPGA: ?? Don't know but their Q-School is so complicated that if Alexis starts it at 15, she'll be 18 by the time she finishes.

No doubt she'll get some huge endorsement dollars so playing and earning money won't be an issue - she said cynically.

Not that I've seen her play, but is she really 'all that'? Doesn't she have some anger management issues? Does she actually enjoy playing, and will she if she is able to play week in, week out? She can continue with her schooling on the road, but let's hope it's better than some other home schooled players!

Obviously I voted 'No'!
