Brooke Henderson Granted Symetra Membership

Brooke Henderson can now play the remainder of the season as a Symetra Tour member after winning the Four Winds Invitational this past weekend.

Immediately following her victory, the 17 year old Canadian petitioned the LPGA for a waiver of its rule requiring tour members to be at least 18 years of age. LPGA commissioner Michael Whan immediately granted the request.

A no-brainer on Whan's part. She's already won and will be 18 in a few months.

There's some confusion in the golf media that Whan or the LPGA has somehow unfairly denied Brooke membership on the LPGA Tour.

This is not true. Her petition to attend q-school as a 16-year old last August was understandably turned down since she was only 16 and other than the t-10 in the USWO, hadn't done much on any pro tour. Even now, she has yet to win a tournament or complete a season with the equivalent of top-40 placement on the LPGA money list or, obviously, finished the season in the top-10 on the Symetra Tour money list.

She has to do one of those things before a discussion can even begin about an age waiver.

This will give her 2 additional ways to achieve that goal. She can accomplish this by:

1- Winning an LPGA event
2- Finishing with the equivalent or better of the 40th place player on the 2015 money list at season's end. She would currently rank #20 on the LPGA money list.
3- Finish in the top 10 of the Symetra Tour money list. Her $22,500 check she received this week will not count. Only earnings going forward. There are still 12 events left on the Symetra Tour schedule.
4- Win 3 Symetra tour events.
Tony ... method 4 (win 3 symetra tour events) does not actually get a player LPGA membership. It gives a player category 13 status on the LPGA Priority List. This is not membership but it's the opportunity to play as a non-member. Realistically, winning 3 events would probably put a player in the top 10 on the Symetra money list, so they'd get membership from that. But technically the battlefield promotion is not to full membership.

She has all of those various ways to make it so I am not crying for her. She has also made a good living this year. If needed as a last resort she can try to qualify at the Q school. If she can't do that then that is her failure.

Every other person in the world is operating under the same rules. In fact it is easier for her because she get exemptions that others did not get, so she is actually at an advantage.

Reality is I think that she would be top 40.
