| 2010 ROY Race Unfair Start? Only one rookie so far has any ROY points. This is because it's impossible for a rookie to get into the first two events UNLESS they get a sponsor invite, as Amanda did. The LPGA doesn't count her earnings from those tournaments on the official money list (even if had won, like Jiyai Shin last year), but they do count the ROY points. And as no-cut events, even mediocre or bad finishes earn points. So by the time, the first first field tournament rolls around in a month, Amanda will have a 39.00 point lead over the other rookies solely because the sponsors of the Honda LPGA and the HSBC Women's Champions decided to invite her to play. Granted it's a small amount but you never know how tight the race for ROY will be by the time November comes around. I'm not blaming Amanda, so no need to get your shorts in a bunch and start defending Amanda. It's not her fault and she's just taking the opportunities that were given her, but I'm wondering if the system is unfair. |

Hi Blue.....I'm neither with ya nor agin' ya at this point. I guess I need someone to explain to me why the ROY points count but the money doesn't. Since the accumulation of money (money list) covers ALL players, my feeling is that money should count. Since the accumulation of ROY points only covers a limited number of players shouldn't the playing field be equal for them? Unless the LPGA can satisfactorily defend their position I have to agree with Blue. Viva Annika |

Didn't we have the same discussion last year when Shin was given an exemption and got points (not that she needed them). Odd that they count the points, but not the money. btw, what happened to Amanda's game this week, was she injured or something? |

This may cause Blue to go into shock, but I also agree that it seems a bit odd that the points count but the money doesn't. It doesn't seem to make much sense.

I can't get my head around the LPGA's reasoning : not counting rookie money, but counting rookie points ? It's up there with Stacy Lewis having to go to q-school because her US Open winnings weren't recognised... Pax Vobiscum Saint-Just X |

I believe the reason the money does not count is because she received a sponsors exemption, It has nothing to do with the fact that she is a rookie. This is the case for all players...veterans, rookies, teenagers, and whomever. Sponsors exemptions winnings will not count as official money in any tournament. I agree, if the money does not count for sponsors exemption then they should not give out ROY points. It is quite unfair. Last edited by Mr.JRo; 02-28-2010 at 11:39 AM. |

Given the qualification criteria for these limited field events, the only way rookies can get in is to get a sponsor's exemption. And because they are both no-cut tournaments, the sponsor exemptions are then guaranteed POY and ROY points, even if they finish dead last. I'm sorry, if I wasn't clear on that. So why does the money not count but the ROY and POY points do? Is this a loophole or is there some logic I'm missing? Again, it's not personal against Amanda, but it seems a little unfair. It turns out she didn't play that well on her Asian sponsor exemption swing and only racked up 39 points, but it could have been more. Don't know. Maybe just an off week (see Sophie G's score) or the LPGA is a lot harder than college. I don't think a rookie, even a top rookie, should be expected to dominate right out of the gate. It's hard to believe that we're all pretty much in agreement. I can't remember the last time that happened.
