Since Putter opened another thread, I'll take the opportunity to say that I also agree 100% with everything you said, Soph. I take your answer, as well as Laura's quote, to mean that whatever changes John Solheim might have in mind when he gets some additional sponsors on board to "grow" the event, if he were to take the suggestion of messing with Team Europe, then he'll get an earful from the players. That's what I wanted to know. Thank you. Good first round in Scotland. Keep it going! |

Boy Sophie, I can understand why you would want the integrity of the teams to stay intact. And the Solheim Cup is a premier, exclusive event just the way it is. But an event that excludes 10 of the top 20 players in the world might be well suited to look at format changes rather than challenge others to come up with an event of their own. I think a 3 team event is doable. The current teams can stay pretty much intact and just add an Asian team. I think an event with an "Americas" team, an "Asian" team and a "Europe, Australia, Africa" team would work. The reigning champion team could get a bye for the first 3 rounds. Those rounds would be four-ball, foursomes, and match play. The winner of the 1st 3 rounds would then play the reigning champion in 3 rounds. That's just an example and I'm sure someone else could come up with a better way of doing it. If no other team event is available, the Solheim Cup is the preferred team event in women's golf. But if another event comes along that features team play with all or most of the top 25 or 30 players, the Solheim Cup might go from being a premier, preferred event to being just another nice tournament on the schedule.

Since the Q&A are for questions to players only, and no discussions, this thread has been moved to Sophie's player folder.

You seem to have this all worked out Virginian...now all you have to do is put up the money!

So including Africa as part of the team would allow for not having to figure out what to do when good golfers do emerge from that Continent.

Well said Carol............"Boola Boss" to you...............Virginian's plan might work well in about 25 years.................when the LPGA has a bunch of GREAT women golfers from Africa..................

Oh Virginian - I do comprehend quite well - I was just wondering who these African players were. Like I said, you have it all figured out, so why not get busy and get this thing going? As it stands right now, the Solheim Cup is Europe and U.S.A. - if that changes at all, it will no longer be the "Solheim Cup" that we enjoy now - it'll be the "watered-down politically correct, unbiased, anti-discrimination Cup" - same as the World Cup of Golf and the Lexus I guess - why have 3? By the way, I haven't heard any bit....er, complaining from any of the "non-eligible" players for the Solheim - where's the uproar there?

Virginian, you should get together with PacRim and put the money up as he/she was saying the same thing, endlessly, two or three weeks ago. From the enthusiasm shown by players and gallery, even with such bad weather, the Solheim doesn't look very broken to me. |
