Ai Miyazato holding the winners trophy

Ai Miyazato from Japan has won her second LPGA event for the year the HSBC Champions, and has become the first LPGA Tour player in 44 years to win the first two events of a season.

Babe Zaharias was the first player to set the record, in 1951 she won the first two LPGA events of the season, the last player to do this was Marilynn Smith in 1966.

Ai Miyazato finished her round on Sunday with a 3-under 69 to take her to a total of 278 or ten-under for the tournament, and a two-stroke victory over Cristie Kerr. and a three-stroke victory over Jiyai Shin, the winner of last years HSBC. Shin closed with a 67 to tie for third (T3) and 7-under total for the tournament along with Suzann Pettersen, Song-Hee Kim, and Yani Tseng.

Miyazato who won the LPGA Thailand lastweek, took the lead with a birdie on the par-four 16th and parred the final two holes to finish at 10-under. Miyazato earned $195,000 for her victory. Which takes her to $390,000.00 on the money list for this year, Suzann Pettersen currently sits in second place with $191,047.00, and Cristie Kerr  is third at $187,468.00

Cristie Kerr held the lead at one point after she birdied No. 16, however dropped back
to 2nd after a bad drive on 17th and bogeyed the final two holes.

The HSBC Women’s Champions was played for the first time in 2008 at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore, and was first won by Lorena Ochoa. The total prize money for this event has been reduced this year by $700,000.00 to $1,300,000.

The best one day score over the four days of the tournament was 5-under-par (67) and was acheived by Song-Hee Kim, Jiyai Shin, Yani Tseng, and Hee-Won Han.
